Now ing upon the various candidates tor congressional honors in this district seems wholly unnecessary at this time, but the majority of voters do desire a display of honest politics an exhibition that is possible, not withstanding the contrary opinion of a few cynics. In this connection The Lkader would like to hear something from the opponents of Congressman Tongue more sub stantial than insinuations and mere conjecture. If Mr. Tongue has failed, for instance, to do his duty in the Vaquina harbor controversy, why doesn't some opponent who is in possession of" the facts turn on the light? Mr. Tongue has now attained a standing in the house of representatives that makes it possi ble for him to accomplish much for his state and district. It is history that the influence pf a new member of congress is practically nil. The people of Oregon know all about swapping horses while crossing a stream. Mr. Tongue is better than any experiment. If there are no more serious objections to him than have so far been given publicity, he is entitled to winning support in the republican congressional con vention. It is now reported that Admiral Dewev has changed his mind and is willing to be president if the people want him. It is hardly probable that the people want him. During the brief period immediately after his return from the Orient, when he was highdinkydink of the whole Ameiican range, he was offered anything he wanted and some things that he didn't wai:t, chief among the latter being the presidency. The admiral has per mitted the golden opportunity to get away beyond his reach. The alarming news comes from Texas that the republican party of the st.ite is still split.
