Every postmaster in Lincoln county is author ized to act as agent for the Lkadkk. The Nicaragua canal bill will be sprung upon the coming congress at its very opening. The leading champions of the measure are very hopeful since Czar Reed discarded his scepter. A newspaper man who flashes a bogus subscription list is about as pitiable an object as Senator Hoar and others in his class who are holding up to the gaze of the world that spurious Gccrgc Wash ington, Aguinaldo. A SURE CURE EOR CROUP. Twenty-five Years' Constant Use Without a Failure. The first indication of croup is hoarseness, and in a child subject to that disease it may be taken as a sure sign of the approach of an at tack. Following this hoarseness is a peculiar rough cough. If Cham berlain's Cough Remedy is given as soon as the child becomes hoarse, or even after the croupy cough ap pears, it will prevent the attack. It is used in many thousands cl homes in this broad land and never disappoints the anxious mothers. We have yet to learn of a single in stance in which it has not proved effectual. No other preparation can show such a record twenty-five years' constant use without a fail ure. For sale by 0. O. Krogstad, druggist. The Northwest Herald of Port land has promised to "look into" a certain municipal matter and "tell the people the truth." This threat ened deviation from its well-known policy comes as a pleasant surprise to the readers of the Herald. The recent state elections seem to have given entire satisfaction to newspapers of every political faith. About one-half of them evidently were never up against real success, and the little Nebraska rainbow is magnified in their eyes until it reaches from coast to coast. If Congressman-elect Roberts of Utah, the polygamist, is permitted to take his seat in the house the majority of the people of the United States will be greatly surprised and justly indignant. The ambitious and gaily man irom Utah will prob ably get all that's coming to him. The Oregonian, with a character istic display of courtesy and good will toward men, devotes a half column to Re?. Dr. Magie, who delivered the sermon at the funeral of Vice President Hobart. In the course of his remarks the reverend gentleman referred to the friend ship existing between President McKinley and Vice President Ho bart and credited the latter with asserting that the president "is a good man." This utterance the Oregonian brands as "arrant pulpit toadyism," and adds: "President McKinley is entitled to the sympa thy of all men of good sense and good taste." Being a man "of good sense and good taste," Editor Scott winds up his peculiar ex plosion with the following overflow of "sympathy:" "Perhaps Vice President Ilobart's ideal of "good ness" in the case of McKinley was Sioux. Indian standard, viz., to take everybody's 'scalp' but his own." The politically versatile editor of the republican Oregonian is daily adding to his reputation as the leading curio of Oregon. As a study in black-and-white he is the whole thing. May he continue to develop in that line and furnish amusement for the millions. Gaining a Wide Reputation. As a cure for rheumatism Cham berlain's Pain Balm is gaining a wide, reputation. 1). B. Johnston of Richmond, Intl., has been troubled with that ailment since 1S02. In speaking of it he says: "I never found anything that would relieve me until I used Chamber lain's Pain Balm. It acts like magic with me. My foot was swollen and pained me very much, but one good application of Pain Lai m relieved me." For sale by O. 0. Krogstad, druggist. PETERSON, Agent, Toledo, Orcgoi Once or twice a year the good house wife has a thorough house cleaning. Tlie house has lieen swept and (lu.sted every day in the year, but the housewife knows that iu spite of vigilance dust accumu lates in cracks and corners, and is only to be removed by special effort. It's the same way with the body. You look after it every day. You take all the ordinary precautions of cleai'liness and health. Yet the body needs its special cleaning to rid it of the accumu lations of waste and poisonous matter which invite disease. Doctor Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery, taken regu larly once or twice a vear, would save many a sickness. It purifies the blood, strengthens the stomach, and cleanses the body of poisonous accumulations.
