When he returned to Wash ington he found Misa Lowery even more beautiful in her maturity than nen he had left her. The really swell thing is the pure white silk or satin shirt-waist made in the greatest simplicity of style, and is worn with a black skirt of net. White shirt-waists in ootion goods have the preference, many being of fine lawn, tucked all over in bias or straight-up-and-down or round-and-round tucks. The severe linen waist of white, with cuffs and collar, is wcrn with the tailor gown having a cutaway jacket in bolero style. It h-ippeiuMl hi the days when English men of pretension stood on their dig nity during a railway journey, and traveled in state in first-class carriages, shut away from the vulgar herd. !n these days, when nobody minds ridiug third-class, it Is a little nniuslns. Two church dignitaries who lived near Tuubrldge Wells met at the rail way station. One was a canon, and the other prebendary. They were go ing in the same direction, and entered a first-class carriage together. Arrived at a junction a few miles off they said good-by, and parted, or tried to part. Five minutes later, the canon, in a somewhat surreptitious manner, enter ed a third-class railway carriage to continue his journey in a more econom ical fashion. To his surprise there sat the prebendary in one corner. Each had desired to leave in the mind of the other the Impression that he always rode "first," and each was determined to save his money by riding more eco nomically. The guilty pair had caught each other. There was a little hum mlng and hawing, and then they both declared that a first-class carriage was too stuffy in summer, and they really preferred to tro third. OPERATED BY W.ND. St. Petersburg, Fla Railroad Uses Wind for Votive Power. St. Petersburg, Fla., has a railroad operated entirely by the winds. The road is of standard gauge and runs from Tampa bay up a steep grade to tne shed of an old fisherman, who is the owner, director and operator of the system. One flat-car represents the rolling stock, and it is propelled by a great sail made fast to the car near one end, allowing ample room for the assorted load of fishing materials, oils and provisions which are brought up UNDER FULL SAlf,. to the fisherman's shed from time to time from the bay when the wind is in shore and of sufficient strength to move the car. It Is then unloaded and re turns to the bay again by gravity. FRUIT TINS LOOK LIKE GLASS. Solid Packages Are Made to Appear Transparent and Fell Better. What appears to be a mild form of deception seems to have received the indorsement of the Patent Office In the granting of a patent for a shipping can or package to Henry W. Rowland Crosby and William II. Harrison, of Aughton, England. This consists of a method of putting up preserves in tin cans, and yet to have the appearance of glass jars, the latter for several rea sons being preferred by purchasers. The ordinary type of tin can Is used, but it Is covered w ith a paper on which FRUIT IN CANS TO LOOK LIRE JAH9. Is printed an excellent reproduction in color of the fruit contained in the can. This label Is devoid of all lettering, and the lower part Is shaded to, represent glass, while the upper part is made to counterfeit a paper or parchment cover tied with a string. It Is designed that these packages shall have every ap pearance of glass Jars as they repose on the grocers' shelves. Chicago Inter Ocean. Luminous Paint on Postofllcca. The total postal receipts for this year are estimated at 1100,000,000, against $87,640,000 last year. New York stands at the head of the list of states and territories with $15,000,000, and Alaska comes last, with $15,000. In the table showing the average amount contributed by each inhabitant of eaoii state to the postal revenues (which con stitutes a pretty fair guajje of the in tellectual development and activity of the people). Massachusetts stands at the head, with an average last year of $2.30 per inhabitant. Boston is oonduoting a vigorous cam paign aaainst the smoke nuisance. T' superintendent of streets has just se a circular letter to all tbe coal dealers warning theta against the sale of low grades of soft coal. In the missive he says: " Your attetion is called to this mutter now po that there may be no cause for complaint on your part later on in the event of trouble, and that your customers may be fully advised as to the action which this department will certainly take unless proper coal is used." Still More Counterfeiting. The Secret Service has just unearthed another baud of counterfeiters, mid se cured a quantity of bogus bills, which are very cleverly executed.
