The changes of life come rapidly,'
silently and unexpectedly. Surprie
is expressed when a change occurs
in any portion of our environments,
yet it is but the inevitable result of
the laws of nature and must be ex
pected. We have collected and

these columns for nearly a year.
During, that time we have earnestly
tried to give all the news to you
authentically and in newsy form.
We have treated all people, parties
and creeds fairly as we understood.
They, in return, have so treated us
and now as we turn our daily work
over into other hands it is with a
sensation of sadness,' which we be-

In the meantime our peoele will

succeed fairly well, it will give it
an impetus which could be secured
in this locality by an actual demon

Mr. Mason senior, with two
grown girls and boys, will arrive
late in September and settle some
where in Oregon, probably near
Corvallis or Medford. He is a
well-to-do farmer and will prove
quite an addition to that locality in .

that the survey steamer, H. G
Wright, which was overhauled and
commissioned to make a survey of
the entrance to Yaquina bay, to
obtain information required by the
board of engineers who are to report
upon the advisability of continuing
the improvements there, has com
pleted the survey. The f.eld work
is in the hands of Capt. Harts, and
the maps will be completed in a
few days

the work has not been platted,
sufficient proof is given that the
channel into Yaquina bay has been
straightened and deepened, and
the crest of the bar has apparently
been forced out to sea some 500
