" " " Tin Plate and the Tariff. The most conspicuous example of a trust or, more strictly speak- ing, an industrial monopoly that' is cited as a creature of the tariff is the tinplate combination. Since 1890, as a direct result of a policy inoornnrsten m the McXinlcy tari tne united states scores, it not hundreds, of mills for the manufac ture of tin plate, an aiticle that had previously been imported from Europe. The trust would, how ever, seem to indicate the fact that the tin-plate industry has reached maturity at an unexpectedly early date, and that it has no furtner claim, as an "infant industry," upon legislative favors. It must not be supposed that the repeal of the tin-plate tariff would shatter the combination.
