THE TARTARIAN LAMB.
A Strange Plant that Closely Kesem
blesj an Animul.
Among the strange stories to be found
lu the narratives of early travelers,
eew are straugi r than that of the veg
etable lamb of Tartary.. This story, as
believed by the reading public, and
even by the naturahsis of two cen
turies ago, is so marvelous, and so ob
viously absurd that we wonder how the
most credulous could have believed It
to be true.
The story is that in an elevated and
cultivated salt plain of great extent, '
west of the river Volga, there may be
found a creature half-animal, half- 1
plant, to which the natives give the 1
name of baroinetz, meaning "little '
lamb." To obtain ir the Tartars sow

melon, from which, in due time, rises
the strange plant, having the figure of
a lamb, with the feet, the hoofs, the
ears, and the whole head, except the
horns, of that animal, distinctly
formed.
It grows on a stalk about three feet
in height, being, according to one ver
sion, rooted to the ground by its four
feet, while another account raises the
whole lamb, feet and all, from the
ground on a single stem, on which it is
able to turn, and also to bow Itself
downwards to the herbs on which it
feeds. It lives as lontr as there is crass
or herbage around it, but when it has 1
consumed all within Its reach, it dies,
and withers away. Its skin is covered
with a very white clown, as fine as silk,
and ia gieuiiy luiaed by the Tailurs,
who pull It off, and wear it as a cover
for the head.
Inside, it is composed of flesh and
bones, and when wounded It gives out
a liquid resembling blood. Wolves are
said to be the only animals that will
eat it, and they are very fond of It
Specimens of this remarkable produc
tion were looked upon as the rarest
treasures In the collections of the curi
ous in days gone by. Two different
specimens have been described iu the
"Philosophical Transactions," and a
third has Its portrait given in an en
graving In Darwin's "Flower Garden"
and Its history told in the florid verse
of that work.
The "lamb" Is a natural production,
greatly helped, Iu the development o
the particulars In which It most resem
bles that creature, by the ingenuity of
the natives. The body Is a portion of
the creeping stem of a species of fern
which generally grows as erect as a
tree. This stem is densely covered with
beautiful, jointed silky hairs, of a rich
golden color.
On the surface next to the ground a
few roots are given off, while the loaves
or fronds, as they are called lu ferns
spring from the upper surface. The
fronds reach a height of twelve or four
teen feet, and have a long bare stalk
before the leaf Is spread out. The Tar
tar takes a suitable part of this creep
ing stem for a body, deprives It of the
roots, and of all the leaf stalks except
four, which are Intended to be the legs,
two short ones for the ears, and a
Btump for the tail, and then, turning It
upside down, trims the stem, and so
produces this marvel of the early ex
plorers. The fern, known to botanists
as the cibotlum baroinetz, Is a native
of Eastern Asia; it has been introduced
Into our conservatories, where It flour
ishes, producing, after a few years'
growth, good specimens of the "lamb."
The silky hairs of this fern form a
favorite remedy among the Chinese for
checking the flow of blood by applying
them to a wound, In the same way as
felt or cobwebs are used by some peo
ple In this country. The more fibrous
and elastic hairs of several species of
the same group, natives of the Sand
wich Islands, are largely exported from
these Islands to California and Austra
lia for stuffing cushions and for similar

A Shrewd Collector.
An odd way of gettlrg Into business
was adopted by a Cincinnati agent.
Ills shrewdness drew the line pretty
closely between Inadvertency and petty
larceny. He had secured the position
of collector for a mercantile house and
In the line of his duties he made some
forty or flf.y cnlls per day on delin
quent customers. He made It a point
to borrow a lead pencil from each one
with which to do his figuring. These
he never returned unless asked to do
so. ' Of course, no suspicion attached
to him on so trivial a matter, for for
getfulness In regard to lead pencils is
recognized as a human falling. Nearly
every one he secured was long enough
to pass muster as a new pencil, and
after collecting 1.000 in this way he
secured a contract for furnishing lead
pencils to a country school. One of
the advantages of his bid was that ho
offered to furnish pencils already
sharpened. From this start his prog
ress was rapid and a basis was thus
furnished for a commodious stationery
store from which he derives a comfort
able Income.
No Explanation Handy.
A little girl rebuked her brother for
laughing at a man with a crooked nose
who passed the nouse. "You musn't
do that," she said. "God made him
that way." "Why, do you s'pose he
did it?" asked the smnll boy with In
terest. "Oh, I don't know," responded
the little sister, indifferently. 'Tec

Water Tower Abandoned.
The famous incline railway at Pros
pect Park, Niagara Falls, is to be oper
ated electrically according to a recent
decision of the Nov York State Park
Commissioners. Heretofore this rail
way has always been operated by water
power, but in view of the fact that
during the great ice bridges, when
tourists flock to see this marvelous
sight, from all over the state, the rail
way is usually inoperative. This has
been duo to the chocking of the intake
with ico and very often too low water.
As there is no other means of access
without a tedious descent and ascent,
the tourists have been greatly incon
venienced, and the management have
lost considerable money. With abun
dant electric power available from the
Niagara Fulls Power Company the elec
tric operation of the road appears to be
most apropos.
