The latter was one of the oldest missionaries of Oregon, and had spent great many years with the Grand Ronde Indians. Cor valls Times. This office received a communi cation from Waldport this week to which no signature was attached. The Leader desires the real names of the writers of all articles that appear in its columns and must have them. It is simply a matter of protection to ourselves as we cannot father this class of articles at all. The proper thing is to sign your name to the article you wish to have published. The 1 we know where to find the writer, and he should be willing to take the re sponsibility of his own words, not throw it on the poor editor. No, we can't do it; our shoulders are too narrow bv at least a foot. The death of Sheriff Williams and Deputy Lamer should not pass with the lessons taught therein unheeded. To brother officers it teaches the lesson of being ever on the alert when dealing with sus pects, no matter how trivial the crime, and never allowing them an advantage while in their presence. The sheriff and his deputies should have followed, notled, Mr. Willard. To the people it teaches that every peace officer takes his life in his hand wheu serving any kind of criminal papers, and for this risk, he should not be asked to serve for wages no greater than could be earned at peaceful labor. Six or eight brave-sheriffs have been killed on this coast duiing the past year, and no one knows who the next one will be to meet death at the! hands of some suspect who is not known to be a "bad man." Russian and German statesmen both favor the Panama canal as against that of Nicaragua, but al- mQSt- eyery permanent point of favor lies with the latter. The former 45 miles in length, the latter ! 180 miles. The former is all canal, tne latter less than 30 miles of canal. The divide of the first is 299 feet above sea level,' the latter 146 feet. Both expect to use a vast amount of water at a 100-foot level where a vast supply must be kept. The former supply largely by artificial means, the latter has a lake covering 3000 square miles for its supply. The latter is 400 miles shorter between Atlantic and ! But this government will be found in a position and the proper mood to gracefully back away from the snag, ..if immovable, and by a second tack, carry its point. With a high standard of morality and a will to assist others, this govern ment of United States cannot fail eventually in raising the Filippinos to an equal footing with other nations. Of course, it will be not all sweet, but as we have iound ourselves in a position where we cannot, in justice, let go, . we can but go ahead and do our best, with success in the near future and heavy responsibility for the present. The first person who found himself robbed should have notified our sheriff afconce and our miner would have been punished by this county instead of Polk.
