The Oregon Central and Eastern like the railroad com pany it succeeded, is a thing of the past. The deed conveying the railroad line, together with all tele graph lines, steamboats, cars, loco motives, shops, rights, franchises and every other species of property or appliance common to railroads has been executed, and is of record in Benton county. Fred McMurray, who but recent ly was in the toils of Lincoln coun ty's criminal court, passed through of the fact that it transfers from one company to another a large block of property, is a very unpre tentious instrument of four or five pages. The figure named in it as the basis of the transfer is "one dol lar and other valuable cou.siucr ations." It was executed by A. B. Hammond president, and Edwin Stone, secretary, of the old com pany The blanks in the general offices and in use along the line as way bill and expense bills all bear the euphonious label Corvallis and Still in the Store.. A warrant was sworn out in the justice court of this precinct this week by Henry Curler, of Drift creek, charging Geo. Hodges and W. D. Griffith with larceny of a cow. It is claimed that the defend ants killed for beef a cow belonging to the complaining witness. Con stable Altree and his brother Oliver as deputy, went to Drift creek yes terday and brought the defendants in. The preliminary examination will be held before 'Squire Hall at 2 o'clock tomorrow. One of the early and sure har bingers of returning prosperity to the country along the Corvallis & Eastern railroad, is the reappear ance of Wffl. M. Hoag in Albany, with the avowed intention of build ing a latge brick building, and re pairing and operating the Magnolia mills of that place. There is not a safer or shrewder investor or specu lator on the Coast than Mr. Hoag. He generally knows where, when and how to make paying invest' tnents. Notwithstanding the terri ble slump in real estate values in Oregon during the past few years Mr. Hoag held on to his invest ments here, and will no doubt real ize handsomely on them in the end. be first class.
