THE MAINE BLEW UP A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT Spanish Treaoliprv is Strongly suspected. Havana, Feb. 15. At a quarter to 10 o'clock this evening a terrible explosion took place on board the United States battle-ship Maine, in Havana harbor. Many were killed or wounded. As yet the cause of the explosion is not apparent. The wounded sailors of the Maine are unable to explain it. It is believed that the battle-ship totally destroyed. The explosion shook the whole city. The windows were broken in all the houses. The correspondent of the Associeted Press says he has conversed with several of the woun ded sailors, and understands from them that the explosion took place while they were asleep, so they can give no particulars as to the cause. The wildest consternation ore vails in Havana. The wharvesSire crowded with thousands of people.' It is believed the explosion occurred In a small powder magazine. Washington, Feb. 16. After a day of intense excitement at the navy department and elsewhere, growing out of the destruction of the battle-ship Maine in Havana harbor last night, tbe situation tonight, after the exchange of a number of cablegrams between Washington and Havana, can be summed up in the words of Secre tary Long, who, when asked as he was about to depart for the day, if he had reason to suspect that the disastei was the work of an enemy, replied: "I do not; in that I am influenced by the fact that Captin Sigsbee has not yet reported to the navy de partment on the cause. He is evi dently waiting to write a full report. So long as he does not expiess him self, I certainly cannot. I should think from tbe indications, how ever, that there was an accident that the magazine exploded. How that came about I do not know. For the present, at least, no other warship will be sent to Havana." The steamship Olivette arrived here tonight with a laige number of wounded and many other survi vors of the Maine disaster. The officers were, as a rule, reticent, and followed in line with chief, Sigs bee, in saying that the cause of the explosion could only be ascertained by divers, but many of the sailors were outspoken in their declaration of belief that the explosion was a deep-laid plot of the Spaniards. They are greatly incensed against the Havana people, who have shown them small courtesy, who looked upon their presence as a national affront, and who have pub lished anonymous circulars cap tioned "Down With Americans!" They believe that the authors of such expressed cowardly hatred would hesitate at no terrible ven- brief account of the disaster:. "The explosion is an absolute mystery to eve.y one. It occurred in the forward magazine, which is just forward of the midships, and below the water line. The coal bunkers are outside, but seperated by two feet of space. According to custom, the magazine was in spected at 8 o'clock in the evening, and the temperature found to be 59. The magazine was locked and the keys given to Captain Sigsbee. The men went to their hammocks in the forward part of the ship after 9 o'clock. The explosion occurred at 9:40. About ten men who were in tbe forward part of theship'were saved, and of these several had their hammocks slung on the lower deck. The explosion split the big ship iu two, and these and one marine, wno was sleeping on the super structure, 40 feet in the air ami in to the watev. In the magazine were 20 tons of coarse powder used for charging the big guns, there being no dynamite, detonating powder nor torpedo heads, nothing in fact that could be exploded by concussion. In the main magazine aft the high explosives were stored, and this magazine did not explode. It is not believed that the Maine was destroyed by a torpedo under neath, as, if this were the case a hole would have been torn in the bottom, and the ship would not have been riven to atoms as was the case. Ihe after part of the shin sank in three minutes." Key West, Feb. 16. The cor respondent of the Associated Press has been assured in a reliable quar ter that Captain Sigsbee is under the impression that the Maine was blown up by a floating torpedo, and that be has communicated his im pressions to Washington, asking at the same time that the navy de partment should send naval engi neers and mechanics to investigate the explosion. The latest advices place the dead at 259. There are no politics, no division !" of sentiment amoner the American people when the Chief Executive of their country is assailed and villified by the diplomatic representative of a foreign nation. We are all of one mind in maintaining the dignity of our government, however we may differ as to policies and other details. Mr. Ward L,. Smith, of Frede rickstown, Mo., was troubled with chronic diarrhoea for over thirty years. He had become fully satis fied that it was only a qutstion of a short time until he would have to give up. He had been treated by some of the best physicians in Eu rope and Americo but got no per manent relief. One day he picked up a newspaper and chanced to read an advertisment of Chamber Iain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. He got a bottle of it, the first dose helped him and its con tinued use cured him. For sale b O. O. Krogstad Druggist. Notice. 280 acres of land at a bargain.
