It seems to me that one of the
greatest industries of a coast county
is being sadly overlooked. Now in
1800. when first landing in this
part of the world, I observed dur
ing the heavy fogs, that sometimes
envelope this part of the coutry.

gave bonds for the claim and went
along with the hay.

which there is liable to be any con
tention. The next offices to be
filled are the two big ones, the
Yaquina custom house and the
Kansas , &,le,z agency. A vacancy does
not occur in either office for some
months yet. It may he possible,
now that congress has adjourned,
that pressure will be made iu these
places and removals made to make
way for some waiting candidate,
but it is not likely. It is probable
that the Yaquina postoffice will be
filled and then a rest will be taken
for a time.

We all had a good time at Uncle
liinmy Chitwood's last Thursday,
which was his 50th wedding am,,,

munity turned out and brought
baskets full of good things. It
looked like enough to feed a whole

It was truly a surprise to them as
ttiey were not looking for anything

their married life and the reason
why the neighbors called on them,

The Rev. Mr. Badger, of Drain

Church. He seems to be an earnest

Donald Macleay, a prominent
citizen of Portland, and one well
known all over the Pacific coast.
died at his home in that city last
Sunday.
The regular annual county
teacher's institute was held at
Newport last week. We have
received no report of the same, but
presume that an interesting and
profitable session was held.
