KERNVILLE NOTES.
Too much rain in this section.
A good many campers coming
and going about the bay Most3 of
them are lancMiuhter and do not
appear to be much pleased with the
country. Difficulty of access is the
main objection.
John Effholder has returned from
working on the Deer Creek road,
connecting the Salmon river and
Slab creek roads. He reports a
small party at work and slow prog
ress, and fears the road will not be
completed this summer. This is
unfortunate, as this road would
make a tolerably good outlet to the
valley, avoiding the long stretch of
road and bad fords along Salmon
river. A number of parties living
near the road and who would be
beneimed by it did not show up
when work was in progress. The
hands had to pack their own grub,
I think the suggestion of the Lead
er that the county should furnish
rations to those isolated settlers who
have to build roads with an insuffi
ciency of labor, should be carried
out.
Some work should be done on
the Newport trail before winter sets

Mrs. A. S. Austin with her young
est son has. returned to Seattle. The
two older boys remain at the Bay,
Dana carrying, the mail.
Andy King is making a wagon
trip to Sheridan.

Z. M. Derrick has been on the
Bay surveying again. Jim is an
expert at finding obscure corner
stakes. He has already made a
large acquaintance with the almost
obliterated government survey here
of 22 years ago. He is rapid, in
dustrious and obliging, and we
hope will be retained by Lincoln
county at a sen-ice for which he is
so well fitted.

stead bill when it is not law yet?

Chitwood Chips.
Crops are looking fine around
here, and promises a bountiful har
vest. Mr. Lutz, the county assessor, is
around here today assessing proper
ty. He seems to be very careful to
do just the right thing by everyone.
Success to Hurley.
Mr. and Mrs. J. 1. Wilson have
just returned from a trip to the
Valley. They brought a fine iull
blood Jersey cow and calf home with
them. They say they got their
choice out of the herd of several
full-blood Jerseys. They bought
her of Mrs. Beach, of Corvallis.
She (the cow) is a beauty.
In last week's Yaquina Bay News
we noticed in the "Eddyville Items,"
written over the signature of
"Bellis," a statement that "Chit
wood seems to be a Very prolific
place for churches. The latest
organization is spiritualistic church
on Thornton creek." Now we
think he spells his name wrong.
He should spell it Bellows instead
of Bellis, for the reason his items
are so windy. He is clear off his
beat when he rives "Chitwood
Items." The above statement b
all wind. There are only two
church organizations in Chitwood,
namely, The Deciples and the
Seventh Day Adventists, and we
can assure the readers of the
Leader and News that His Satanic
Majesty is not so far the control , of
the people here as to establish his
church here.
Work at the Victor Sandstone
Company's quarry is still in pro
gress. They are changing the
position of their hoisting works to
about seventy-five yards nearer the
water tank. When that is ac
complished they will be ready to
take out rock in any quantity
wanted.

Notes From Eddyville.
On Tuesday, Tune 29th, the
Eddyville Sabbath school enjoyed
themselves by having a picnic.
Owiog to the rain the party had to
repair to the hall over the I. X. L.
company store, where a grand din
ner was spread, after which the
afternoon was devoted to instru
mental and vocal music, speeches,
recitations and plays. All present
enjoyed themselves.
Our genial friend Will Tucker
has gone to the Valley, to be absent
a few months. While we feel sorry
to part with one of our neighbors
we trust his trip will be a paying
one. '
What might have been a serious
fire was timely noticed about s
o'clock on Thursday evening. Mr.
Conrov was sitting in his office
writing when bearing a cracking
noise t in thej upper ..part of the
buildincr. hastened uo stairs to
investigate and found that the up-
perrpartof the building was 011
fire. He immediately ratio- the
fire bell, and with the help of
Mr. Marion Hunt and Ed. Dutton
and several buckets of water the
flames were stopped, but none too
soon as a very few minutes more
would have been too late.
We had a visit yesterday (Sab
bath day) from Rev. Mv. Tonkins,
who preached an eloquent sermon.

The I. X. L. Co. are buying and
shipping, large quantities of wool,
cascara bark and other produce.
We notice in our city tonight Mr.
Henry McCullough and family,
from Newport. They are guests
of Israel F. Eddy, Esq.
On arrival of the train this morn
ing an officer of the law, armed
with the proper implements of his
office,: held up the passengei train
at this station, and search was made
for an escaping criminal, but the
party was not aboard. Several
constables are searching the moun
tains for him. We learn that the
cause of action Is for theft and
burning a building.
We are having lots of rain. Hay.
grain, potatoes and fruit look well.
Mr. C. Wesley Price, of Detroit.
Michigan, paid us a visit, remain
ing over night on Friday last, the
guest of Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Conroy.
July 5th we had quite a celebra
tion, and at night a grand display
of fireworks' took place illuminating
the sky for miles around.
We learn that our esteemed friend
Mr. Israsl F. Eddy is about to build
quite a large dwelling house, and
take unto himself a wife. Well,
we wish him success and a lone
life.
