Much interest is being taken, in the artichoke just now as a cheap feed for hogs, and not a few are using them as feed for cattle. - The economical feeder is the one that makes the money and as artichokes are a cheap feed the raisers of them are on the right road to prosperity. Do not raise with the expectation of selling but feeding. N. W. Pac. A subscription paper is being circulated asking donations to build a road from West Yaquina to con nect with the road at head of Wrights creek. The list is headed by the Hon. Lafayette Y. Wilson, wno puts his name down ior $200 We have nothing whatever to say against the road. That is one thing that the county needs and can't get too much of, but it the whole thing is like Lafe Wilson's $200 subscript iion u is a commence game, pure and simple. Lafe Wilson hasn't got $200, and we doubt very much if he has $2.00 to put iuto a road, or anything else. In their offorts to build a roa'd we wish them suc cess, but if they think the people will bite on Lafe Wilson's $200 bait they are mistaken. The people of Lincoln county know Lafe. Glen Items. The weather is rather moist and warm in our part of the country, but these conditions are favorable to the rapid growth of vegetation Cattle on the range are looking well and will sooii be fat enough for beef. Petitions? Well yes a few, only five petitions and remonstrances were presented to the county court from Drift creek yesterday, April 8, but we have not yet learned the disposition made of all of them. The edict has gone forth "strain platb justice" will henceforth be administered to erring mortals on Drift creek and vicinity. Take warning all ye people who have failed to please all, though you have tried. J. Banks, Wi D. Griffith, C. M. Brown, C. Brown, Irven Holbrook and Wm. Said warrants will be redeemed on presentation. Interest on the same will cease from date of this notice. Dated this 26th day of March, 1896. J. L. Hyde, Treasurer of Lincoln County, Ore HERMANN IS DEFEATED! Thirty-four Ballots Taken to Bring About This ltesult. Albany, Or., April 8. Special to the Leader. The republican con eressional convention of the 1st Oregon district is past and gone and with it went the political ascendancy of Binger Hermann' star. The fight was a long and hard one but it finally prevailed The delegates aud lobbyists be gau to gather as early as Sunday By Monday's trains most of the delegates were on the ground, only a few coining in on convention day The candidates were Hon. Binger Hermann, Thos. H. Tongue, of Washington county, TilmOn Ford, of Marion, H. B. Miller, of Jose phine, and Warren Truitt, of Polk The fight speedily settled itself into a fight of the field against Her mann. At a caucus held before the con vention it was determined by the anti-Hermann forces to stand solid against Hermann until a break was made. in Hermann's forces, and this program was duly carried out ue comctiuuii was called to order at 3 o'clock by Thos. Tongue, and the first contest of the couven tion occurred in the temporary qrganization of the house. The antis nominated O. H. Irvine, of Yamhill, and the Hermann followers nominated J. H. McClung, of Lane. A division of the house showed 62 for Irvine and 49 for McClung, and the antis organized the house without further oppisi- tion. 1 ne usual committees were appointed and the convention took a recess of one half hour. After recess the committees made their reports- which were adopted without opposition, the temporary prnnfaation being made perma nent. ' Nominations for congress being then in order the friends of the candidates named above placed their names before the convention On the first ballot the vote stood Hermann 55; Tongue 38, Ford 18, iruitt 11, wuier 10. this was Hermann's high water mark From this he dropped gradually to 40 on the 6th ballot. This vote he held, never going lower and some times going as high as 49 until the 34th ballot when a break was made in his strength sufficient to nomi nate Thos. H. Tongue, of Wash ington county, and the hard fight for the congressional nomination was over. Great jubilation ap peared among the opposition and equal despondency among the Hermannites. The convention was a good natured, disorderly outfit. The chair frequently appealed for order which came not. Ballot box stuff ing was a marked part of the con vention, nearly one third of the time there, being more votes cast than there were voters in the con vention. Considerable soreness prevails in the Hermann camp, , and it will probably be not all gone . by the time election day tolls around. ' . One of the amusing things of the convention was the. attempt of E. E. McKinney to make a speech in favor of Ford. He had his speech carefully written out and committed to memory, but when "he got fairly started he forgot it like some awk ward school boy. Three times he tried to repeat it, aud finally put his manuscript in the hands of a friend to prompt him, but it was useless. With a wild grab and a stagger he gave it up and set down amid the whoops and yells ot the convention. Bear in Mind There is a store on Yaquina Bay where you can, at any time, find a full stock of Groceries, Flour and Feed, and the same will be sold at very reasonable prices.
