S. engineers met at Newport last Friday evening and on Saturday moraine made an examination of the works at the mouth of the Bay, and in the after noon visited the light house at Cape Fouhveather. In the evening a meeting was held at the Opera house, at which time the board gave all who desired an opportunity to present any reasons for or against the continuation of the work on the harbor. The first to present a statement was Hon. R. A. Bensell, who gave a brief and concise state ment of what had been accomplished and what he believed could be ac complished in the future. He pre sented cogent reasons for believing that the work had not reached a sUge where it was impossible . for man to do more. Hon. W. T. Rigdon, of Salem, then presented a statement from Marion county showing the pro ducts of that county and setting forth that their natural route to the markets of the woild wns tluovh Yaquiua harbor. He was followed by Hon. E. Hofer, who gave further statistics concerning Marion county, and the necessity of further improvements of the harbor. Hon. H. N. Cockerline, of Eu gene, presented in a concise report the amount of products Lane coun ty shipped, and urged that if it was in the power of engineerine skill to do so, that further relief be granted to them by deepening the water on the bar, so that the commerce be unrestricted. In behalf of Benton county Hon John D. Daly made a strong state ment showing the necessity of fur ther improvements. He also de picted in glowing terms what mieht be expected in the way of commerce when the railroad tapped, the. great basin of Eastern Oregon, as it was sure to do. Xhe wealth, commerce and fu ture rgreatness oM,inn . county,- and the relation of Yaquina harbor to them, was set forth by Mr. C. C Hogue, of Albany, in a brief and well prepared address. Mr. Hoirue went right to the point of the mat ter and his statement was well re ceived. Hon. J. K. Weatherford followed the statistical statements with a short speech upon the subject. Mr, Weatherford's voice was not In good shape, but never-the-less he delivered a telling speech. His re marks were pointed and full of dig nity and power. Short talks were also made by Mayor McFadden, of Corvalhs, Mayor Gatch, of Salem, and others. The meeting was then adjourned. Senator McBride came over to at tend the meetine Saturday evenino-. but the effort proved too much for him and he was compelled to eo to bed upon his arrival at Newport. Of course it is impossible to pre dict what the nature of the report of the board will be at this time. The members of the board gav'6 no intimation as to what their findings would be, but those who were most in contact with them when here are very hopeful of a favorable report'. The board and the members of the various committees' returned to the valley on a special train Sun day. Communicated. Editor Leader: I havine seen several copies of your paper have concluded it was to my interest and also my duty to subscribe for it. Through your paper vou are working for the development of the resources of the county, and conse quently to my Interest and everv other citizen that has an interest In the county. I am a "newcomer." having filed Number 13. last fall. My wife and I are well pleased with the country, and, al though we are poor we are deter mined if possible to build us up a home. We are desirous also of seeing the country developed in every respect. We want good schools and plenty of them; good wagon roads and bridges; the country settled up with good enter prising people; our present railroad built through to its destination, and another one "to boot;" our coal mines developed; the dairy business built up; several creameries in the county, and more of our rock quar ries opened up. We have in a few miles of where we live, near Chit wood station, a rock quarry, owned by the merchant there, which is pronounced by experts to be as good as any in the county, and it is only one amongst many in the county that is only waiting for capital to develop. We need some way of letting, people everywhere know just what kind of a country we have got in this "neck o' the woods'' cud hc'.v iiiauy natural re sources it has got, and it. is ray candid opinion that there is no bet ter way of doing this than .by through a good county paper! And the way to have a good county paper is to support it. Consider that it is a part of our business (which it really is,) and work for it. I am willing to do all J can in my poverty stricken condition lor advancement of this section of the country for what is the interest of the county is to my interest and to the interest of all living in the county.
