Immigrants are coming iu increasing numbers, pre pared to help fashion here out of Nature's bountiful gills the greatest commonwealth represented on the starry banner, James Carter, the big hearted whole soled section foreman, of Siding One, may his shadow never grow less, gathered us in from the way side, and his hospitable and en tertaining wife placed before rrs as line a dinner as il has been our lot to sample for many a day. Robert Campbell, Lester Wiuigh, Sheriff Land! 1 and Hen Jones were with us", and it must indeed be a bountiful spread that will feed a fat butcher, a hungry editor and a couple of frmlshe 1 county officers. Mrs. Rich, of this place, and 1'eiiiott, of Corvallis performed a delicate surgical operation upon the 11-yrar-old son of Mr. and Mrs. llaruier, ol'Silet, last Sunday even ing. The boy 1ms been a sufferer from a running sore on his leg and the bone had become diseased. Some time ago the boy was taken to Tortlaud and operated upon but the diseased bone was not all re moved, and hence no great relief was obtained. lr. Rich admin istered chloroform to the patient and Dr. TernoU removed the diseased bone. The operation was necessarily a long one and the pa tient came out form under the in llueuce of the anesthetic before it was completed, but he bore the pain like a little Trojan. She was so much frightened that her wits deserted her and .he staggered up to Mr. I'ym's house, which is near by where she was found and cared for. The wild rumors of assault etc,, are entirely without foundation. We visited our public school Wednesday afternoon, nnd it was with a feeling of pride ihat we cast our eyes over the school room and saw the ivell filled seats of neat, orderly, rosy checked boys and girls. From this school last year was graduated twelve scholars, of which orre holds a second grade certificate, five hold third grade certificate. Three have already taught in the public schools of our county. This certainly is a splendid record for our school. The average atten dance at present is 43 in Prof. Helhers' room and 27 in Miss Gailher's room, We noticed that a few more seats were needed, and also a chair and stand or desk for the teacher and a window light or two. However, as thcie is now a reasonable prospect of getting our delinquent taxes these wants, and a couple of new stoves, may soon be added which will give more com fort to our boys and girls. Our citizens are justly proud of their school building. And under the able and ellicient corps of teachers our children are being well cared for. The public schools are the very foundation of our American form of government, therefore, everyone should be a firm friend to our public schools Dii:i). LKWIS.
