Newport has a tase 6 genuine highway robbery. Yesterday while Peter Stoker was fetwnin from a fishing trip and was coming along the trail towards his house be was con 1 routed by a man with a mask over his face and a shoe gun in his hand, who ordered him to stand and deliver. Mr. Stoker had a coat on his arm and the robber made him lay the coat '.ovn and lay his money $4.50 on top of it. The thief then compelled him to stay there for about three quarters of an hour. Mr. Stoker finally es caped through the brush and ran for home. When he arrived there he found that his house had been broken into during his absence and ransacked, though tho only thing of value he missed was his shot gun. Mr. Stoker went at once down and. gave the alarm and swore out a warrant for the arrest of the high wayman. Sheiff Landis and other offteers were notirjed to be on the look out for any suspicious charac ter. The highwayman was de scribed as being of a rather heavy build, and wore dark pants, light coat and dark hat; his face being maskeij could not bs described. The authorities have their sus picions as to who the qujlty parties are but no arrests have yet been made The Executive committee and Buildinp- mmmlitfifl nf flip nn-ontc ... ' -o of the State Agricultural College at Corvallis met in flalem yesterday says the Journal to consider school finance and buildings. About $16,000 in wan-ants were issued to the treasurer Dr. Applewhite. These are not available however, but draw 8 per cent interest, and are stamped "not paid for the want of funds." Ttie college gets $3.75o quarterly from Washington B I . . a .a lor ine station work, ana it is thought by the regents present that the school had enough funrjs to run this year if the state war rents can bu ensued by the latter part of the year. The condition of the accounts of the late Treasury, A. R. Shipley, was discussed and some light is thrown on the matter. A few days before the bank closed Treasurer Shipley drew a $10,000 warrant of the state treasurer, out f a JPVi000 appropriation and do posited it with Hamilton, Job & Co. They endorsed it and sent it to Lad l and' & Tilton to pay a debt they owed there and the state treasurer cashed it with their en dorsement. They practically paid a private bank balance with public money. That is a matter of record that will be shown in due season. Proceedings will be begun by the lixecutive committee both criminal and on the bond of A. R. Shipley, deceased. It was plainly a viola tion of the statue forbidding bank ers to use public funds or draw the interest on them, and the most vig orous steps will be taken by the state to save itself. Judce Boise of the regents is acting with Judge Burnett of Corvallis as counsel for the state. K. M. WADE & CO,, Coi'vallis, Oregon, DEALERS IN Hardware, Stoves and Ranges AMP FARM :-: IMPLEMENTS.
