OCEAN STORM RAISES SWELL Southeaster Fails to Conquer Huge Swell From West Caused by Hurricane. After .threo duys of experiencing tho heaviest- ground swell which has been felt .along tho coast yet this season, bar conditions at tho Colum bia Hlver, Cwos Bay and Eureka, aro reported still pretty lively by steamers arriving In. The long lines of huge, breaking seas Jiave not yot disap peared and the Alliance had not cleared from the liarbor lato this af ternoon. The Alliance had the most trying time of any craft arriving here this week. She was barbound at Astoria and also outside the local harbor. Captain Lofsted of the Alliance at tributed tho huge swell to a severe storm which had been reported to coast stations by vessels crossing the North Pacific. The swell was bo heavy that the stiff southeaster which has been blow ing along the coast for several days had little effect on It, except to cause a nasty cross sea. The southeaster has not yet flattened down the huge western roll. BREAKWATER IN EARLY TODAY .Steamer Had Choppy Trip From Portland Will Sail Tomorrow Night.
