THE COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD, OREGON, MONDAY, APRIL 21, 1913-EVENING EDITION. WBtlHER COLO IN ARIZONA Stephen Rogers Writes That it Is Not All Sunshine in the Sunny Southland. HON STAND ON BASEBALL Stephen C. Rogers, the well known Coos Day pioneer, who with his wife have been spending the winter in TucHon, Arizona, writes to Tlio Times the following Interesting letter about comlltloiiH In that usually Biinny land. Mr. and .Mrs. Rogers expect to return to Coos liny about the laBt of May. Mr. Rogers writes as follows: Editor Times: Wo aro very comfortably located hero In Tucson. Have rented n threo-rooin hoiisw and are enjoying ourselves fine. I have Just got through rending the Times. We are getting the paper very regular now and wo appreciate It very much. I toll you. us wo get all of the news. 1 take great comfort In rending the top lino on the Ilrst pnge of the paper as they are ho very lit and right to tlio point. I understand that you have lived hero nnd know the coun try so I will not try to describe It. We liuvo boon having ver" change able weather here since we hnvo been here. It was wet nnd cold for qulto n tlino when wo Ilrst came and then wo would have a warm day and the the next day would be quite windy and dust Hying everywhere. As there are no paved streets and no green grass, so the wind has a fair sweep. Tlio hard frost last winter killed a grunt many trees so It don't look as cheerful aB It otherwise would. I see there has been a number of bad accidents there of late. We think of starting home towards tlio Inst of May so as to arrive there when the wenther gets good there. Yours respectfully, S. C. E IN DIBIT TODAY Steamer Arrives From Port- land Heavy Fog Is Encountered "Make that kid quit pulling that HtTlng. I wnnt to sleep." This was the sleepy-voiced appeal that came to Captain l.ofstod of the Htennier Alliance about 3:30 yes terday morning ns they were ap proaching Coos Hay and encountered n heavy bank of fog. The fog was so deuso that the lookouts could hco but a few feet ahead and ho was having the mute sound the whistle every few second. "Sorry, but that kid won't quit pulling that string until we get out of this fog," replied Captain l.of nted The fog lasted for nearly an hour and then lifted except occasional drifts The Alliance had a good trip down and had a big cargo of freight both for heio and Kiiroku. She had a good passenger ,1st. Among tlHwe arriving on the Al liance were: J. Anson, It. W. Puekott. A. Car bon, C. I.. Dement, II. Guatufsoii. "W. C. Craig. Mrs. J. L. YVasson. Editor Coos liny Times: 1 have noticed an article In your valuable paper of the dnto of April 17th. wherein Mr. Shrock hns mis quoted tho writer, and concluded to cull the attention of the public to same: It is true, I went to North Demi to learn. If it be possible, what could bo done to bring to a successful close the termination of tho wrang ling over baseball, and the formation of a league (with so mo class) for the season of 111 HI. Wo. the fans of Ilundon. are In favor of a four-team league, as well as everybody else, and nro not In fnvor of any six-team league at all. Wo have offered to raise another tonm on tho lower riv er providing Unit nelthehr of the up river tennis conclude to enter the league, but will not ngreo to do so that wo may have n six-team league. This Is the stand we have taken. Tho Blx-team suggestion was advanced by one of those present nt the North Doiul meeting, ns the only solution of tho matter, and while some discus sion was given the matter, there was nothing definite arrived at. at that time. Mr. Shrock did say to me tlint they were soro at Marshlleld for not sending a man cjvor to the meet ing at Coqiillle. and also that Marsh lleld 'htitl better go on n Httlo slow, as their place In tho league was none to secure. This Is nn absolute fact; and from his attitude, and conver sation with me ut that time. I had no reason to doubt him, nnd did so in form somo In Marshlleld with whom I discussed tlio baseball situation. Hut when Mr. Shrock or anyone says 1 told them Hint .Marshlleld was soro at them, as lie snys I did. ho Is tell ing something that Is not true, nnd without any foundation whntever. While anxious to do all possible to bring matters In this lino to a close, we do not think that wo are eom- imllii.l trt v.iimrt (ii ntiv uiii1i tm.tlpu ,.v,iv.. ... ..... ....J ....... .......... In fact the whole thing borders on child's piny, and would remind a person of the antics of n bunch of high school kids. Ihindon wants to play ball, and will play ball this sea son, and nothing hut the death of all ball tossers, Is going to prevent Tt. Handon Is ready to form u league with Mnrshllold alone and play ball with them If no other teams see lit to enter the league. It certainly seems queer that the other loams can not get together and straighten out all matters, and get to playing ball. It Is a fact that our county has been educated to a very high class of bull, and Hitch league teams as were put in tho league tliu last two seasons, does not give cut lie satisfaction to tho public. Handon was at Ilrst lu favor of throwing tho whole lcngiio wide open, mid give tho county somo baseball with n Httlo class. Hut ns tho other tennis thought that live men were about all that they could stand for. wo agreed to that. Hut again somo neighboring towns havo fought against this number, wo again agreed that three men from tho out sldo should bo all that bo allowed. Now, after ngreolng to all, and every thing, we aro told that Handon Is not wanted In tho league by all tho towns except Marshlleld. TIiIb Is why 1 sny that 1 guess wo will havo to play with Marshlleld. Wo will sny that It certainly looks as though there aro some towns who don't like our game. I will promise you. how ever, Hint whoever wo piny ball with, will havo to go somo this season, as wo Intend being there with tho goods. I nm truly yours, R. K. I.. 11131)1 l.MOX. Handon Manager. AXOTIII.lt HANDON VII3W. Handon World Sa,s That Coqiillle anil .Myrtle Pnlut Are Cheap. Tho Handon World concludes a long article on tho baseball situation as follows: "Coqiillle and Myrtle Point are suffering from an acute nttack of belly ache because they can not run tlio whole show on their 1x2 pint- form, iinmlon is not cheap and can put two teams In the held If necos aary and good ones too."
