Pursuant to the direction of tho Common Council of tho City of Marshfield, notice Is hereby given that on Tuesday, tho Cth day of De cember, 1910, there will bo held In the Council Chamber in tho City Hall of tho City of Marshfield, Coos County, Oregon, a regular general eloctiou, for tho purposo of electing two members of -the Common Coun cil to serve for a term of three years each, commencing tho first Monday, in January, 1911, and of electing a Recorder to serve for the term of one year, commencing the first Monday in January, 1910. The said election will bo held be tween the hours of nine o'clock A. M. and six o'clock P. M. That J. R. Llghtnor, J. H, Mllner and A. D: Wnlcott have been here tofore by tho Common Council of said city appointed as Judges of said election, and Roy Lawhorn, J. C. Merchant and C. H. Marsh as Clerks of said election. Dated this 25th day of November, 151U. JOHN W. BUTLER, Recorder of the City of Marshfield, Coos County, Oregon, Mr. Editor: I nm becoming nttnehod to your city. Sometimes I have had to fight "tho hardest kind" ngalnst discour agement from tho reflection of that "spirit of harmony nnd unity of pur poso" upon which you so nbly com plimented your citizens tho other evening. But I linvo found your citi zens Individually, so blameless, that I ngreo with you that it is a condi tion, and not a fnult, and will bo cor rected in time. Llko the majority of newcomers, I nm Interested in real estate. In a sninll way, I hnvo boon moro fortu nato In ronl ostnto Investments thnn In nny other kind, nnd, furthermore, I havo understood that real estate prlcos form n good basis for Judging tho truo conditions In a community. Thoro Is "cant" in business, as woll ns In religion nnd society. You don't need to inquire, nnywhore, to find out that "tho telophono sorvlco la Bomothipg fierce"; Hint tho public sorvlco corporations are robbing tho people right and loft"; or that "tho city council Is .tho worst ovor." Thcso things nnd othors, pass currant eve rywhere, tho snmo ns fractional sil ver, whether truo or not. Tho rea son Is perfectly plain nnd elenr. It Is Just "because." For no ono ever seems to hnvo been In n city whoro telophono girls wcro pollto,.or public sorvlco corporations honest, or conn cllmon cnpable. At jast not at tho tlmo ho was thoro. After ho leaves, It Is necessary for n tlmo to soften tho momoiy of tho old wrongs, bo that tho now ones mny rccoivo tho full forco of his Just wrnth, wherever lie may go. Theroforo thoro seems to ho no rent basis of comparison. So, nlso, Is over present tho fnn.l llar cry that "real estate prices a: out of sight." This, on tho pnrt of buyers, Is of courso proverbial. So'o mon wns wise to It. "It Is nougnt, salth tho buyer, but when ho Is ujn his way, then ho bonstoth." On tno othor hnnd, tho sollor stands rendy to contest tho claim, so hero perhaps a balnnco Is struck. But ovorybody must hnvo his opinion on thcso things, nnd no matter, often, how It Is arrived nt, It Ib frooly ropentod, Just ns a matter of general Interest and Information. I hnvn sought light, from puro self Intorcst, on this ques tion of real catnto prices, nnd from nil I hnvo so far boon nblo to lenrn, It Is ono of tho most difficult and com plex. What fow writers havo ventur ed to discuss it seem to bo always safeguarding- their opinions by tho caution that no prlnclplo enn bo np plled to any particular locality with out making nil sorts of allowances for tho peculiar conditions thoro, which mny turn nil reckoning upsldo down. And yot slnco coming to Coos Bny (ns woll as olBowhoro), I have heard tho quostlon of real ostato prices dispos ed of In a sontenco by nowcomors who hadn't waited to "got their Ben logs"; by old timers who don't know any thing about prlcos in Modford or Red mond or Portland or Port Orford: by mon who never owned nnv ronl estato; by professional mon who nro really supposed to put in a wholo lot of tlmo studying othor things. I do not moan to Intlmnto that I havo not heard tho question Intelligently con sidered, for "I havo bought goldon opinions from nil sorts of people," many of which havo boen vory helpful to mo horo. But really, a majority scorn not to havo gone ns deeply Into this question ns thoy havo Into tho condition of tho whont mnrkot, or tho urlco of potatoes, or the political ot baseball situations. And yot tholr .pinions nro continually going out, to help form local public opinion, to ln crenso or diminish tho qonfidenco ot your peoplo in your own city, nnd to Jlscourngo or luro tho Btrangor who might Invest and remain among you. Not boing n learned man, I confess to boing somewhat confusod n this matter. It would bo interesting and helpful to many, I nm suro, if you would, through your columns, invito a little discussion of tho matter by thoso who havo studied it seriously. At leastl am sure many of your cltl dons who aro qualified to pass an opi nion would bo glad to do po briefly; in response fo an Interview. It seems to mo that there nro few things upon which public opinion could bo more profitably clarified. If prices actu ally are too high, It is no use not to face the truth, and your real estate mon aro wasting their efforts in try ing to interest investors. If thoy are not, it is fair to yourselves that your people. have a somewhat united un derstandlng to that effect. STRANGER. COOS BAY TIDES. NOVEMBER Monday.. 2S Tuesday. 29 Wod'd'y. 30 High "wator .
