Firemen Unable to Raise Suf
ficient Funds to Carry
Out Plans.
Jack Davis, president of the Marsh
field Fire Department, today issued
the following .statement concerning
the calling off of the Fourth of July
celebration:
"At a special meeting of the Fire
Department, called for the purpose
of deciding whether or not to carry
on a celebration on very limited
means; it was decided to let the mat
ter drop. The soliciting committee
which had been out for several days
interviewing the different business
houses, met with very little encour
agement.. It was decided several
weeks ago to celebrate and so stated
in this paper, so that it would be pub
licly known. They did not care to
start with a subscription list at that
time and so postponed this part of
It for some, but made many other
arrangements. It happens that
others got the better of them on that
part of tho proposition, and when
they did start on their list they were
met by turn-downs and absolute re
fusal to support tho "graft." In
most cases tho business houses were
under tho Impression that the pievi
ous list as passed around was for a
general town celebration, and claimed
that such had been represented to
them, and hence hnd given all they
could possibly afford. To theso hous
es thero are no ill-feelings, but those
who turned them down cold, thero is
a great Ill-feeling among tho lire
boys. Thoy wish to thank those who
did subscribe, and those others whoso
Intentions v ore good, for their liberal
support, They also wish to thank tho
business man who so liberally sub
scribed his good will, also those who
offered to rather subscribe if they
didn't celebrate.
"It is now up to tho business hous
es of tho city whether Marshfield will
celebrate the Fourth of July in a
patriotic way or not.
"The Firemen will decide at t,heir
next regular meeting how they are
going to spend the day. A trip to
Sunset Bay is being talked of at p"rv
ent."

Hanson, who has been running on the
Xann Smith has been selected by the
C. A. Smith company to become cap
tain of the Redondo when the steam
schooner is turned over to the C. A.
Smith company on her arrivel here
Saturday. The vessel was sold by
the Simpson Lumber company. It is
understood that she will be complete
ly overhauled, will be changed to an
oil burner and equipped with wireless.

"Xo bids have been received," was
the terse ieport of Recorder Orcutt
to tho City Council Monday night,
when there came up tho order of
business relating to tho flotation of
$10,000 worth of bonds for paying
one-third the cost of laying asphalt
1 pavement in Uoseburg this year.
'Recorder Oicutt went on to explain:
' "About a dozen eastern bonding
firms requested information as to the
1 proposed issue and this I supplied.

tion of the money market tho stated
rate of interest of 4 per cent was
too low, especially for western pro
jects. They gave tho assurance, how
ever, that thoy would consider the
proposition on a 3 per cent rate. Xo
