AS ONE AMONG the best friends and champions that Coos Bay possesses, The Times has a right to offer a candid word of coun sel, at tho moment It Is mo3t need ed; and It proposes to say that word right now, deeming the time propi tious and the cause well-founded. There Is far too little loyalty to Coos Bay among her own people: There Is very little civic spirit here, and- practically no solidarity what ever; there Is too much clashing of personal and private Interest when the Interests of the public are at stake; there Is no sense of specific obligation to the place; there Is no mergence of commercial concern and unanimity, and no significance of Coos Bay's first claim upon her own prosperity. This is not arraignment It Is mere suggestion. Loyalty to one's own peculiar in terest does not mean Joyalty to the city. There Is nothing of sacrifice and-local pride In that; that Is but a' distinguishing mark of selfishness, per se. Tho civic pride that moves a man to do, and speak, and give, for the good of the town, is what is needed to make for solid, adhesive, successful spirit and action. The subsidence of the personal end to the communal end, and tho avoidance of all attempt to foist the private concern to the front until the larger mutual concern of the city is fixed and first, Is what is needed to create the realized Idea of actual obligation of the citizen to tho city. "Coos Bay's commerce, first, then mine," must bo the sentiment and slogan that shall move us to unison and real achieve ment. The Times is moved to this state ment by tho overt act and covert sneer of somo of Coos Bay's prom inent business and professional men In reference to the present railway movoment nnd prospects. Whatever olso may he asserted It cannot be successfully denied that the present railway survey has served to adver tise the requirements and resources of this section more than anything else. It Is also the first ical tnnglblo effort of tho peoplo to solve the rail way problom thomsolves. The fnct, also that It Is tho most conspicuous oxamplo of united action for com munal advancement ever niado on Coos Bay should bo sufficient to mako these mon nt least glvo tho community tho charity of their si lence If they nre not In favor of tho proposition. Wo are about to entertain a largo number of prominent men from Ore gon nnd Idaho drawn hero by this splendid evldonco of tho Coos Bay spirit of solf help. The Times hopes that thoso obstructionists will at least have the graco to present a harmonious front to visitors at that time. Thoro must be more straight forward, honest, f: loudly feeling gen erated among the men who are In a position to direct things on Coos Bay. There must bo more concern for tho mutual good of tho outlro community. There must bo more general roallzatlou that as cltlzons we should remombor that our first duty is to Coos Bay.
