THERE ABE TOWNS, and even cities, where the genuine boost 'er is almost a hero when tho people and things he Is up against are considered. It takes a fine qual ity of courage to boost a city where every other man is grunting and grouching and knocking. Not that we have any such people on Coos Bay, of course; but there are places we know of not over 1,000 miles from here; and it is the knowledge of what their boosters are contend ing with, that makes us give forth this protest. The man who has his home town's interest at heart and works not only against tho pressure from without but against the Inanition within and the drag of home Indifference, Is a hero pure and simple If he achieves anything whatever. But the booster 1b a cheerful cuss; he does not boost because he wants to; he Is simply built that way and finds his chief pleasure In giving the sunny and happy Ideas that possess him, to nil who will take and assimilate them. It does not make any difference to him that ho (s surrounded with a lot of moss-backs, moles, "stand-patters," skin-flints and stagnated hu mans, who prefer tho old to the new and the cheap to the costly and mod ern; he goes -right on sowing tho seed of progress and prosperity, and finds his reward. In being among the first to profit by the advantages hi3 boosting has wrought, All that Is the matter with tho booster Is there are not onough of him. This is what makes him a hero. If J.UI.W.mUJ North Bend Man Makes Ludi crous Mistake to Keep Sumner Sober. (Special to The Times.) SUMNER, Ore., July 21. An amusing incident occurred here re cently when a prominent North Bend citizen and his estimable lady were on their way to help us celebrate. Just below town they noticed a box beside the track, which looked sus piciously like-It might contain liquid refreshments. Actuated It is believ ed by a desire to preserve Sumner's reputation of a "dry town" the gen tleman paused long enough to pick up the box and deposit It (with what care Is not known) in a secluded place, then with a sense of duty per formed, he resumed his journey and arriving here shortly after, straight way forgot the Incident in tho fes tivities of tho day. The following Monday morning found the dredge crew once moro at the scene of their labors and upon encountering some obstacle in the channel, they had recourse to their box of dynamite which was found to be missing, and which a diligent search failed to locate. Thereupon conjecture was rife. One thought It a joke, another the prank of small boys, while a third opined that It had been taken to ... as he had heard "a whole lot of shooting over there." The dynamite, however, was not forthcoming", so a fresh supply was obtained and work resumed. After a few days "Leonard Master's ' tele phone bell rang out Its summons, and upon boing answered, our worthy friend was found to be at the North Bend end of the line, with in structions for locating the missing box. What his sensations wore upon being told that instead of "booze" he had been handling high explo sives, has not been learned. NEWS OF SUMNEH. (Special. to The Times.) SUMNER, July 21. The black berry season is now on, and Sumner hills are populous with berry p.ickers. Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Noble, Mrs. Butler and Miss Maud Bowron are oncamped near here picking and can ning blackberries and enjoying life In open air. The Sumner Hall Company is making extensive Improvements to their building, hnvlng added a large dining room where ball suppers will be served In future, also a neat porch over the main entrance. C. A. Sanford of North Bend, Is the ar chitect, in charge of the work. Mrs. L. G. Musters was called to- jday to the bedside of her father, J Steckel of Bay City, who Is very low. Mr. Tuttle, a boiler maker, Is hero making repairs on the dredge's boiler. An auto driven by A. L. Ilembreo of Portland, has just passed through hero bound for Marshllehl. Mr. Ilem breo stated that ho found tho roads in very good condition and had his machine been In good working order he could havo mndo tho trip In good time, HAMMOCKS at COST.
