Much interest is being taken in the production of this ever-popular comic opera which is to be presented in the Masonic Temple tonight and repeated tomorrow night. For the past two weeks about 40 of the lead ing singers of Marshfleld have been busy preparing for this ovent and last night's rehearsals found every one well up in their parts, and the chorus with as much swing and snap as is often seen In professional com panies. The scenery has been espe cially prepared to represent the deck of the "Pinafore" and the costuming will all go to make it a most enjoy able affair. The music of this opera, written by Sir Arthur Sullivan, is bright and catchy and Pinafore has enjoyed a longer run than any other light opera it now being produced for the fifteenth year by some of the original company as conducted by the composer, In the Savoy Thea tre, London. The cast is made up mostly of singers new to a Marshfleld audi ence, but all are good and are sure to score a success The part of Cap tain Corcoran will be taken by Mr. C. R. Wade of Bandon, as the Mr. Van Tassel who was to have sung this role lias been obliged to leave, but Mr. Wade has taken the part so recently that he will fill the require ments in an able manner. The opera is under the direction of Mr. H. E. Robinson and given for the benefit of the High School. NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS. Editor Times: THE PORT COMMISSION has now organized and Is prepared to take up the important mat ters which made it necessary for Coos Bay to decree its creation. It marks a great and radical change in he local situation, for not only have the several communities on the Bay been welded Into one municipality, but the Bay, which, from a legal point of view has hitherto been any body's plaything, has now come tinder a dominant authority and that dominant authority is in a posi tion not only to regulate navigation but to prevent trespasses. The power is subject to the will of the peo ple, but is great and salutary If ex ercised as it should be. The Times has confidence in the personnel of the commission. While opposition may haie manifested it self in tho few days preceding the governor's appointments, to some of the men recommended, the personal objection has been overruled and the sole question remains an Imper sonal one, namely, the best Interests and greatest good of Coos Bay. Let no man of Coos be so blind to his own interests as to let spite, pre- . judlce or personal opinion of In dividuals stand In his light, In this mighty work. The true history of Coos Bay is begun. We believe the commission under stands its full mission and will serve the people well. They are not mere ly acting for the cities on the Bay, but for all Oregon and Idaho whose people pray daily for the develop ment of this harbor on the Oregon coast. They must advance to meet their problems without fear or favor. It will not do to be timorous or timid in the work. They must act boldly. Perhaps It will not be amiss to suggest some of the matters which must be taken up and hand led without hesitation or doubt. The first thing which the com mission may and will consider is the financial question. It takes money to make money and great muni cipalities are made in this commer cial age, not on the pittances which their founders are able to advance from time to time, but upon the money which they borrow. Boston bujlt Itself without borrowing from abroad in two hundred and fifty years, unicago grew to iour limes Boston's size In sixty years on bor rowed capital. And Chicago is none the worse for it. Coos Bay Is in a similar position. Does she want to develop? Has she the capital to force development? Has she . the credit to borrow the capital? If she has the credit, let her not hesitate, because her destiny Is a great one. Tho sum of the whole business Is that the commission should prepare forthwith to submit to the people a proposition to issue from $100,000 to $500,000 worth of bonds. It should do so for certain well defined pur poses and the people should bo made to clearly understand thut the bonds so Issued are to obtain for Coos Bay certain very useful and valuable as sets. The government Is not un likely to remove the dredge which Is now doing valiant work In the Bay. Other places, like clamorous children, are claiming a right to it part of the time. Let Coos Bay have a dredge of its own and keep the present dredge too. Fight for It. There should be an ample fund pro vided to dredge out a wide and deep channel. That will do as much good as a railroad and will, above all things, aid the local railroad com pany in placing the suivey and right of way which they propose to ac quire, in the hands of capitalists who will build that road. Improve the Bay and all routes overland becomo very valuable and In great demand. Let the commission remember, while their province Is apparently confined to the Bay and water navi gation, that their action at this time means more than mere water trans portation. Another thing which the Port must wrestlo with immediately. Lot them proceed at once and in good faith to teat the validity of tho title claimed by those in whose nnme tho "mud flats" stand By what author ity and what law do they own and hold tide lands which are covered twice n day with water, surrounded entlre'y by deep water, attached to no upland and comprising tho lnr- gest part of the Inner bay? For the benefit of tho Port of Coos Bay, let this great question bo settled and determined. The commission has no greater protective mission. We repeat thnt tho commission can easily destroy and negative Its purposo by boing timid. Courage, nggrosslveness, onorgy nre nlono per mlssablo at this time. WE SAVE YOU MONEY Izatlon of a port before the people of Coos Bay's cities, is to do something and do something worth while. It should be remembered that bonds Issued, payable In twenty years, are no burden to the people who Issue them, If they expend the money pro perly. A dredge and a deep and wide channel are not small assets by- any means. The annual Interest charge is all the burden the bonds entail except a small tax for a sink ing fund to help pay the bonds. But the population of Coos Bay, in twenty years from now, provided we get a deep and wide channel and a railroad will be ten times what it is at present and the valuation of Its property at least ten times the pres ent valuation. Any Issue of bonds within $500,- j.000 for a well-defined legitimate . purpose, will be a mere bagatelle I when tho bonds become due. If such Is not the case then It will have to be admitted flint Coos Bay is a tremendous hoax instead of "a great seaport." It's As Good As Money T vtcIH fcA.
