MISAPPLIED IMPULSE. Two ordinary, unskilled laborers who had been hired at a modest wage to pump air to a diver working In tho hold of n steamer sunk off Now York City a few days ago fell into a quarrel with each other over the proprietorship of a paper of tobacco and abandoned their labor then and 'there to seek Immediate settlement of their dispute. In tho meantime tho highly paid diver underwent the first stages of suffocation and would have died but for the opportune and voluntary substitution at tho pumps of two disinterested spectators. But when the diver was pulled, gasping and blue, out of a fathom or so 'of water, he was In no condition to resume his labors, and the wreck ing company, which had contracted to remove the cargo from tho Bunk en hulk, lost an entire day which anight have been profitably employed. One of the militant laborers went to the hospital to have a gash In his head treated while the second, who had wielded too successfully an Iron pipe, was taken to jail. It was not stated what became of tho 10 cents' worth of tobacco. Most men, like tho two laborers who neglected to pump, have small .and obscure parts to play In tho world's affairs. Yet, however, un pretentious their functions in tho ma chine of life, almost any of them can cause trouble in a disproportionate degree when ho drops his allotted task without proper notification. For every diver there must bo two pump ers to furnish a steady current of fresh air, without which tho man at tho Important end of the hose could iccompllBh nothing, Tho duties of the" common workmen who merely supply the oxygen which the better man requires In tho performance of his part of tho job, nro as essential to tho undertaking as the moro ex acting and much more sensational work of him at the tip of tho libso. There could bo little of actual achievement without tho Intelligent and willing co-opqratlou of tho hum blest tollors, as well as tho highly salaried specialists. Tho trouble with most of us Is that wo are too frequently ready to waste our energy on tho most trivial side issues when we should bo pumping air to tho man who Is doing tho work. Several of "the boys" who believe that tho old dinner pall should be kept full on Sundays as well as on working days, were making regular trips from their homes to the bar, and surreptitiously they gave beer to the duck. When Kell reached home he cut the string and turned the bird loose in the back yard. It fell down and bumped Its bill. It staggered aim lessly about the yard. It picked fights with the chickens and finally It hooked one of its wings around a clothes post and went to sleep. Kell4 didn't know what was the matter until the jokers called him on the telephone and asked him how the duck was handling Its "package." "It's got an awful head this morn ing," said Kell.
