The French masters of the dance anet in solemn conclave a few days 3Jgo and decided that a dreadful "cri sis has arrived. They sat far into -the night and discussed matters ap pertaining to their profession, and the atmosphere of the meeting was Instinct with grim apprehension. For the professors have recognized the fierce fact that certain unkindly Influences threaten the popularity of amateur dancing. The conferring masters were not slow In concluding that polite so ciety will go to the dogs when people cease shaking the genteel foot. "If dancing falls off," Inquired one of the delegates of his wasp-walsted breth ren, "what will become of socletj?" AVml no one had the nerve to tempt fate by voicing the horrible answer. Besides, they all knew what would happen; conjecture was unnecessary. No doubt the professors have a so licitude for other things, too, besides tbe welfare of society their own Jobs, for instance. For when dancing hecomes a moribund art, up goe3 the jdanclng academy. The woes of the waltz experts may be attributed immediately to the di rectoire gown not the sheath, but the plain kind which the .women of naris are now required to wear. However modish and artistic the di--xectolre draperies are, its stingy, clinging folds are not helpful to 'the dancer, the professors assert. The act Is, It Is quite Impossible to per form the correct steps of any of the -ordinary dances when the gown is -worn. The women .indeed, have Slven up trying, it is asserted. Hence -the gloom in the ranks of the terpsl horean teachers. However, the professors do not propose to be shelved. It is not dig zilfled for an artist to make conces sions to the exigencies of the times, Ahey admit, but it is better to have -no dignity than to abandon art alto gether, if the gowns cannot be inade to suit the dances, the obvious -way out of the difficulty is to make the dances to suit the gowns. That 13 what the masters think. They liavo even gone so Jar as to embody their thoughts in the following res olution: "Whereas, In every age and In ev ery country dances have always been Improvised to suit the prevailing fashion in feminine attire; whereas, Ht has recently and till now been the ustom to dance with long, gliding steps, we, the assembled masters of tbe art of dancing in Paris, hereby iocreb that this year and hereafter mJances now in fashion shall bo ex ecuted with very short steps, so as to suit the existing fashion of wear ing dlrectoiro dresses." The ready capitulation of the danc ing Instructors Is a wonderful vic tory for Mo modistes. Heretofore there may have existed some doubt sis to tho relative strength of tho two factots of the social world. There is none now. Sartorius is supreme In France, at least. But why did not the professors, In stead of submitting so humbly, in vent a dance which could only bo ex ecuted successfully in a gymnasium suit, and attack tho dlrectoiro In its own field of populaiity?
