From the Oregonian, No vember 5, '08. Paul Strain, proprietor of the Boston Store, at First and Salmon streets, Port land; of the United Mer chants' Store, at Marshfield, Ore., and the United Mer chants' Store, on Market street, San Francisco, yes terday afternoon through his attorneys, John F. Log- an and John IT. Stevenson,' filed in the United States Circuit; Court a. petition in bankruptcy. The news that Strom had been forced into bankruptcy -will surprise many people in the citv, for it was generally believed that his store here was mak ing monev. Strain places his liabilities at $128,294.79, and his assets at about $90, 000. The petition was filed early yesterday afternoon, but nothing was known of it until late in the alternoon. In addition to long list of creditors named in the peti tion, there is a listof nine employes who have salaries coming to them. While the petition does not set out the reason for Strain's' failure, it is understood that he was forced to the wall by enter ing business in San Fran cisco. Some time ago Strain established a store at 913, 915 and 917 Market street, and this venture is said to have cost him between $40, 000 and $50,000. The list of creditors is a long one and includes business firms from New York to San Francisco, and also a number of Port land business houses. Local newspapers and those of San Francisco were caught by the failure. y ii- the UnJted Stores by cml Strain, will, foe closed out dollar.
