LAVATER..
Always Unfortunntc.
When I stand within a hall;
Far..tho1devator bawl
With a frown.
"Going up?" I loudly cry,
And tho urchin makes reply:
"Going down'
Whe,n .you see jne buying stocks,
Hoping to acquire both rocks,
And renown.
"Going up?" I loudly say,
But. my broker answers: "Nay;
Going down."
Whon old Charon I shall meet,
Looking, mystical, but neat,
In bis gown
"Going up?" I'll murmuur low,
'And he'll doubtless answer "No;
Going down."
ANON.
Is a, dentist ah artist just because
ho dr,aws teeth?
One way to borrow trouble is not to
pay your debts.
Even the actnr doesn't like to make
a show of himself.
A fellow has no business to be
head-strong with a weak intellect.
Other people's clouds are always
the ones that have the silver lining.
Thojrlgmaker rejoices In the fact
that there Is plenty of room at teh
top.
The trouble about looking up to
people Is that it encourages them to
look down on us.
Tho man who permits his pleasure
to interfere with his business may
reach the point where he won't have
any of either.
Most men are willing to laugh
twice at the same story In order to
get a chance to repeat one of thu'r
own.
A woman doesn't figure the worth
of-the husband she might have had,
but tho worth of the Income she
didn't get when she sues for a breach
of promise.
Blobs (at tho theatre) That chor
us girl on the end looks as" moau
she had something on her mind.
Blobs Well, sho certainly hasn't
much else on her.
Wlgg Sho doesn't seem to bo pop
ular, and yet sho Is as pretty as a
picture.
Wagg But sho Is usually in an
ugly frame of mind.
Usually when a man has out
stripped his childhood companions in
the race for position In life, he may
rest assured that they are evening up
matters by tolling people what a ham
ho used to bo at school.
Customer from tho Country
"Here, I've fetched my now wife up
- for to have her plcturo took.
Photographer Yes, sir. Full
length or bust?
Country Tho hull full length. If
tho machine busts I'll pay for it.
"Pa," said tho politician's little
boy, looking up from his book, "whrl
, iv -Is a 'nomesls'?"
"A 'nemesis,' my son," replied the
father wearily, "is a female offlc3
A' seeker that you foolishly 'promised to
assist.
"In tho piece wo play tonight tho
sceno was laid about tho time of tho
Bpanlsh war," explained Barns Tor
'mer. "Topp, and the eggs tho boys have
boon buyln' up was laid about the
same time," interrupted Stung Again.
Tho fashion notes toll us that the
woll-drossed woman this year will
wear short gloves, two veils and t-n
yards of corset laces. The prospect
is interesting.
"A microbe export says death lurks
in tho telephone," remarked a Coos
Bay physician's wife to her neigh
bor. "Profanity lurks in ours," camo
tho response, "I guess from tho lan
guage I heard Charlie using when
ho got out of bed at midnight to go
and hoar somoono say: 'This Is the
wrong number; ring off.' "
'It was llttlo Ethel's first visit to
church and tho sormon bad for Its
text, "As e sow, so shall ye reap."
But on her return home she could not
remember it, and in consequence was
chlded by her mother for being
stupid.
A fortnight later a seamstress
came to the house to do a day's
work. After watching her for a
while fashion old style garments Into
those that were tho vogue, Ethel sud
denly exclaimed:
"O mamma, I know now what the
preacher said. It was, "What you
sew In the winter you shall rip In the
summer.' "
A well known Coos Bay youngster
as studying the next day's lesson
at home the other day. The studying
was laborious as was indicated by
the drawl out and this was what was
overheard:
"Al-ways speak the truth and o-bey
your par-ents.
".Be gen-tle and qul-et. Never
slam the door and shout and scream
A-bout the house.
"At the ta-ble eat slow-ly; not in a
greed-y man-nor like a pig."
Suddenly the little one shut the
book with a portentous bang, and an
nounced with firmness and decision:
"I'm not going to let any old readei
boss me like that."
" Trials of the law.
Here at my roll top desk I sit and
bend mo o'er a legal tome and have
a pleasant sense, to-wit that I am
really quite at home. The peace we
cannot understand has claimed my
spirit more and more; I yield at last
to its demand I like the interesting
law. The steady drone of city streets
floats gently through my window
pane; if I look out my vision meets
the sunshine and blue sky again. I
much prefer these heavy books.
Hark someone enters at my door
a lovely lady, by her looks I like
the pretty, fluffy law.
"Ah pardon me," the lady says
"A legal question bothers me." But
all this time she does not raise her
heavy veil the least degree. Imagin
ation takes mo fast through fame,
romance, and fees galore ambition
realized at last!!! I like the frag
rant juicy law.
She adds, "I've just got a divorce
from Bill and now I want to know
when I can marry Jack? Of course
you understand how these things
go."
"Today," sigh I.
She says, "Your foe?" -
"One dollar:"
"Here I'm glad I saw your sign.
Good day."
Thus exit Sho.
I like tho heavy, dreary law. Tho
Green Bag.
