Ills efforts to disseminate a part - of it during the last few years have led most people to believe that the wealth of Andrew Carnegie oppresses him. In an interview of some years ago he stated that he could never " experience genuine happiness until he had rid himself of the superfluous dollars he had accumulated. He has given more Incisive expression to this conviction in his recently published book, "Problems of the Day," which comprises many chapters ot a scurdy philosophical nature. Mr. Carnegie indulges in a few characteristic reflections on the sub ject of money getting and money hoarding which, coming from one of the most successful captains of in dustry the world has known, ought to be accepted at face value. Most or his observations are saved from triteness by the fact that it is he who gives them utterance. One of the things he asserts casually is that mill ionaires raTely laugh, which is not a platitude as far as Mr. Carnegie is concerned. For it is only within' re cent years that' he has arrived at snch a conclusion. He elaborates upon his statement with the assertion that a man is in the condition to thoroughly enjoy the final period of his life 'only when he enters upon j the last cycle completely divorced from worldly cares. And great -Trealth, says Mr. Carnegie, is more ' burdensome to old age than poverty. The man who is truly able to appre ciate the terminating years of exist .ence, he says, in him who possesses a modest competency to provide for lis -whilom wants, and who can look ' upon death without regretting tern- . poral obligations which must remain tinfnlfllled, and yet whose earthly t - possessions are not so great as to' . cauBO him a pang at the prospect of having soon to relinquish them for- ever. "Mr. Carnegie has discovered noth- ing that other millionaires have not learned beforo him since the time -Hiorn havp lipen individual fortunes, i Vast accumulation of wealth is only a source of worry and disappoint ment to tne possessor, me omy iuu tho men who amass fortunes ever have exists in the getting of money. They can not spend It to any per sonal advantage. They derive no pleasure from the spending of it. They heap it up In piles and sit on it, constantly agitated by tho thought that some one is contemplating a Taid from behind. Mr. Rockefeller 3ias said as much, and also Russell SaRe when he reached old age and found that his money would not buy him ordinary human content. And tho undosirabllity of wealth has been driven, cruelly, into the oomprehen slon of Russoll 'Sage's widow. Mr. Carnoglo's book epitomizes tho inevitable lnment of all millionaires. HACK IX VERMONT. Tho reform wave is sweeping even little Vermont from its moorings. Tho legislature which is In session ia wrought up over primary election bills. From Montpelier comes this word: "Tho demand for reform continues, and the best way to effect it, In tho opinion of many, Is to enact a pri mary election law. This does not suit the politicians, and tho matter Is not well understood by tho averago legis lator, so there Is a great deal of missionary work to bo dono If tho bill Is to bo passed. Senator Gib son's bill Is very sweeping in ita proThsfons, and requires a primary election for every officer, from con gressman to sheriff. Tho bill lntro deed In tho houso by Howo of Bon- tngton applies only to candidates for .fiUta offices, and makes provision for an alCernnto choice In some cases." It Is to ho regretted that primary election roform is not yet understood In Vermont. A great deal has beenl uid about tho backwardness of tho :;.: :,. Willi I fit Tr- TOAST AND TEA !
