It is stated that Mr. Hume's will will be read In San Francisco. Fined For Assault. John Laskey was lined $5 and costs In Justice Ponnock's court on charges of as sault preferred by Louis Stone. Ow ing to some estcnuatlng circum stances, Justice Pennock remitted the flno, leaving only tho costs to be paid by Laskey. Both parties reside on Catching Inlet. Undergoes Operation. P. A. Pe terson underwent an operation at tho Marshfleld hospital yesterday for tho removal of the prostate gland. It was the flrst operation of the kind ever performed in the county. Tho operation was performed by Dr. Houseworth assisted by Dr. Straw and was entirely successful. Horse Bites Thumb OIY. Ethel Cavanagh, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilkes Cavanagh of South Broadway, yesterday had her thumb bitten off by a horse. Tho horse was in a pasture near their home and she was on the fence. Tho animal stuck up its nose and snapped, completely severing tho thumb just below the first Joint. Dr. Houseworth attended tho case. EASTSIDE SCHOOL EMTERTAINS PATRONS Large Number Attended Thanksgiv ing Exercises and Approve Woik of Pupils. Tho teachers and pupils of East side gave an Informal reception to the friends and patrons of the school district Wednesday afternoon. A short Thanksgiving program was enjoyed by all. The Httlo peo ple distinguished themselves by sev eral recitations and pretty drills, while the older ones sang a number of two-part songs. At the close of the exercises the patrons were Invited to walk about and examine the work done by tho pupils this term, specimens of which were arranged about the room nnd on the walls In a very artistic man ner. The work in drawing was indeed most excellent, especially as the pu pils have had no Instruction In this subject until the last few months. In addition to the regulnr work of charcoal and water color there were some line specimens of clay-modeling and paper-cutting In tho lower grades while the sixth and eighth grades showed some very creditable work in basket-weaving. The geography work was well car ried out in the shape of relief maps made of salt, also of papler-macho, and one card-hoard map of tho Unit ed States showing tho regions of dif ferent products in a way that was both amusing and Instructive. After the work had been duly ex amined and admired, refreshments were served by four daintily dressed little maidens wearing white caps and aprons. About forty guests wore present and all felt that they had spent n most profitable and delightful timo, also that a voto of earnest thanks were duq. tho two teachers, Mrs. Bevler and Miss Franso who had brought about such splendid results for the boys and girls. .Among those present were: Mrs. Vineyard, Mrs. Pederson, Mrs. Kitt son, Miss Rose, Mrs. West, Mrs. Jor dan, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Downing, Mrs. Jonnlngs, Mrs. Stonecypher, Mrs. Telefson, Mrs. Wheeler, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Oleson, Mrs. Martinka, Mrs. Humbert, Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Lund, Mrs. Mateson, Mrs. Kynoll, Mrs. Robertson, Miss Sailing, Messrs. GUITIERREZ arrived hero from California yesterday to spend several weeks with her sisters, Mrs. Mason and Mrs. Crlbbs. Sho is the mother of "The Candy Kid Bunny" who has won so many friends while ho has been spend ing the summer with his aunts hero. CLARKE BOWMAN DIES SUDDENLY IN PORTLAND Woll-Kiiown Marshfleld 3Inn Suc cumbed at Home of Brother thcro Cause of Death not Known. Clarke Bowman, n resident of Mnrshfleld for a number of years until threq or four weeks ago when he removed to Portland, died sud denly there yesterday. A telegram conveying the announcement of his death was received by his father-in-law, N. Nelson, last evening. Tho cause of death was not given and Mr. Nelson leaves on the Alliance today for Portland to assist his daughter In tho funeral arrapgements and bring her back. While here, Mr. Bowman was em ployed ns a printer and made many frionds. In Portland, ho resided at the residence of his brother, J. D. Bowman, In Montnvllla, a Rose City suburb. ' Mr. Bowman Is survived by his father, Merrltt Bowman, of Portland, nnd two brothers, J. D. Bowman o Portland, and Alvln Bowman of Falls City, Ore. Several married sisters also survive. Mrs. Bowman was formerly Ella Gortrudo Nelson of Marshfleld. Sho and their eight-year-old daughter, Jano Penrl, will probably return to mako their homo with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nolson, at tho corner of Second and 'C streets. Tho funeral will probably be held. In Portland as Mr. Bowman's mother Is burled there.
