Shipments of turkey3 from Doug las county this year will probably aiot exceed a total of 13,000 I j'-id. against about 20,000 last year the Roseburg Review. For 'In Thanlcelvlng trade, the shljiiv .ts liave aggregated about 10,000 head, and it is estimated by local dealers that not over 3,000 more will follow for Christmas and Xew Year's. Early in the season in September 3,200 bead of the choice holiday birds were shipped out of the county to Port land and thence to the Philippines as part of an order from the govern ment to supply the troop3 stationed In the islands. This consignment was made by E. G. Yuong & Co., of Oakland, who, this year, as usual, lead all other individual shippers in the county. The shortage of turkeys this year Is ascribed to an unfavorable season for their propagation. The price re ceived by the growers, however, is on an average of 1 cants per pound more than paid last year, and the highest in 12 years. Cho'ce b'rds, dressed, brought as high as 22 cents per pound for Thanksgiving trade and the price may go even higher for the Christmas shipments. One dealer says there were nearly as many turkeys raised this year in the county as in 1907, but that the grow ers are holding a large portion of them back, with the expectation of getting still fane'er prices during the December demand. On deliveries closed during Sep tember for the Philippine shipment, growers were paid on an average of $2.25 per head. Figuring that this rate will prevail during the. Decem ber deliveries, the. sum of nearly 535,000 will have been d'sbursed among tho growers for outside ship ments during the year. To this must be added the value of about 2,500 turkeys which will be consumed at borne either on Thanksgiving or the later holidays, and a large quantity of ducks, geese and chickens which go to meet holiday requirements. This will bring tho total revenue up to a figure ranging close around the $45,000 mark, unapproached by any other county in the state. To tho shipments for the Thanks giving trade, Oakland shipped about 4,500 and Roseburg contributed about 3,200 birds, whilo perhaps 2,000 more were consigned from Yoncalla and Drain. In tho Oakland shipments were some 1,200 head raised at Myrtle Creek, Riddle and Canyonvllle. From Roseburg, the biggest consignment was mado by Harness & Johnson 17,000 head, and they cstlmato that they will ship fully S00 more In December. George Kohlhagon, sent away 1,200 head during tho past week and he expects to ship as many more for tho Chrlst nias nnd New Year trndo. Max Weiss, supplied 250 head of turkeys for tho Phlllpplno order in September, but shipped only 100 head for tho Thanksgiving mnrket. Frey & Co., consigned 300 bend and the Hunsa-ker-Guest Grocery Company shipped 100 more. Tho last threo named will probably not ship more thnn 500 tur koys in nil during December. iMost of the turkeys found their way Into tho markets in San Fran cisco and Portland. A largo batch wont to Tacoma, whllo about 2000 head wero consigned to Oakland, CaJ., which city will bo tho head qunrters of a largo torrltory In tho distribution of turkeys among tho employes of tho Wolls, Fargo Ex press Company.
