"We arc now cutting timber from She forests of the United States at the rate of 300 feet board measure ai year for every man, woman, and ehlld. In Europe they use only GO Jboard feet." Few statements could be made TVhich ' would better convince the average man that this country leads Ahe world In the demand for timber. .It Is made by Treadwell Cleveland, Jr., In a circular which treats of tne conservation of the forests, soil, renter, and all the other great nat ural resources, which has just been published by the United States Forest Service. In speaking further of the consumption of timber In this coun try, Mr. Cleveland says: "At this rate, in less than thirty ;years all our remaining virgin timber will be cut. Meantime, the forests which have been cut over are gener ally In a bad way, for want of care; Shoy will produce only inferior sec ond growth. We are clearly over he verge of a timber famine. "This is not due to necessity, for Ihe forests are one of the renewable .resources. Rightly used, they go on producing crop after crop ln- deflnitely The countries of Europe i&now this, and Japan knows it; and helr forests are becoming with time :not les3, but more, productive. We -probably still possess sufficient for" est land to grow wood enough at iJDino to supply our own needs. If we nre not blind, or willfully waste Vul, we may yet preserve our forest Sndependence and, with It, the fourth of our great industries. "Present wastes In lumber produc tion are onormous. Take the case ioI yellow pine, which now heads the 31st In the volume of annual cut. In 2907 it Is estimated that only one 3nYlf of all the yellow plno cut dur ing the senson was used, and that the other half, amounting to S, 000, 000 words, wus wasted. Such wnste is typical. Mr. R. A. Long, In his ad dress on 'Forest Conservations' at the Conference of Governors last spring, pointed out that 20 per cent of the -yollow plno was simply left in the -woods a waste which represents the ttlmher on 300,000 acres. "The rest of the waste takes place raT the mill. Of course, It would nov er do to speak of the material roject a0 tit tho mill as waste unless this -mntorinl could be turned to use by tsninu "better and more thorough form oT nulizntion. But in many cases wo ?SnovT, and In many other cases we Viave excollent reason to believe, that smo&t, if not all, of this matorial could Vue used with profit. It Is simply a vjuestion of Intelligent Investigation t.miL more than all, of having tho will v.o economize ""But thoro are other ways to con iriervo tho forest besides cutting In ia1f tho present waste of forest pro ducts. Tho forest can bo made to rprortuco thrco or four times as rapld tyna thoy do at prosent. This is truo of both tho virgin forests nnd tho cut-over lands. Virgin forests aro often stocked with first-class timber, taut this stock has beon laid in very "Slowly, on account of tho wnstoful ompotitlon which Is carried on con stantly between tho rival trees. Then "doo, in tho virgin forests thoro aro many kinds of trees which havo iroached maturity and stopped grow ing, nnd these occupy spaco which, Hf hold by younger trees, would bo living in i now stock constantly. A" s-ognrds tho cut-over land, sovero utllng, followed by flro, has checked .tho growth so soriously that In most .cases reproduction Is both poor and slow, whilo in many other cases ttfliuro is no truo forest reproduction at -all at presont, and thoro Is hut ltttlo hope for tho future." llinr A COUPON book at tho Sanl ary Market nnd save flvo per cent un your meat bills. It makes a man swear to But what's the use? So many things make n man swear. A thing of beauty Is a joy forever if she doesn't talk too much. Undoubtedly the reason why women talk so much is because they think it would be embarrassing to be caught out of practice. TJcrocs are painfully made by a brave deed and easily unmade by a little silliness. Keeping up ap peardnccs often taxes one's In come, but keep ing up disappear ances taxes the resources of the sheriff. Some men will do money except work. anything for There are people so stingy that they never flatter anybody but themselves. Compliments, while seeming to bo very Innocent and simple, sometimes prove to bo expensive things. People who look large have often been known to feel small. Don't expect too much of your follow man. Our hearts may be all right, but some of us have an impediment In our brain. It is n good thing to know how Ko quit and much better to prove it. She looked ethereal divinely fair Of form and feature, with a queenly grace Of poise and manner and an elegance of costume and of carriage which be- spoke Her station as the cultured flower of wealth Born to the manor house with marble halls; And, drawn by all her charm, with heart athrill. I hastened near that I might hear htr voice And thus it was I heard her sweetly say: "Oh, say that tightway guy glvea me a pain; Why, you can bet your life he's on the job Whenever savin' money Is the stunt; Of all the cheap chair warmers I have met He Is the worst that's hovered 'round my hut; And such a bonehead, too no dub like that Can have much luck with me; I Iced him quick As soon as I got wise" But here I fled Alas, alas, this is an age of slang Generally.
