THRIFT GOES OVKR DETAILS OK THE SOUTH- HIS OPINION OP THE EQUAL 33RX OREGOX COMPANY'S AC-' IZATION OF THE ASSESSMENT. rinox. COQUILLE. Or.. Nov. 5 190S. SSditor Coos Bay Times, Dear Sir: We note that the Southern Oregon Company through ht Secretary, R. E. Shine, takes ex- eeptions to my statements as to the actions of the Board of Equaliza tion, and more especially to the fact that the "Southern Oregon Com pany did not advocate the raising of other assessments until the company found that it could not have the assessment on its own property re--dnced." "Also when they could not set a reduction, Mr. Shine pointed out property here and there he .-thought should be assessed higher." In the article the company states, "'This statement is incorrect and mis leading and has a tendency to create a wrong impression of the position of the company in this matter." "With all due regards to the repre sentative of the company, we wish to act forth what actually transpired at -that session of the hoard and let the people judge for themselves as to the -statements made. Mr. Shine appeared by duly filing Ills petition with the Board of Equal ization which petition sets forth the present unequalized assessments of the Southern Oregon Company hold ings, and other adjacent holdings in the peninsula of Tp. 23 SR 13 West, and a few sections in the northern part of Tp. 2G SR 13 West. This petition further sets forth that the company holdings were assessed higher than other holdings in the immediate vicinity which is to some vextent true. -Later, when Mr. Shine appeared "before the Board in behalf of his peti tion ie claimed there were great dis crepancies in valuations and in his plea for an equalization suggested nt of the goodness of his heart that It would be better to reduce the as- sessment of the Southern Oregon Company holdings, than to go to the -trouble of notifying the numerous jjroperty owners of the before men tioned vicinity. When the board ex awessed their unwillingness to re duce the company's valuation's he in sisted very much upon the equaliza tion of valuations. This certainly 4Hd not mean to let the assessment trcmaln as it was and he was cer sfcainly advocating either the lowering ol the company's property or the rais ins of the adjacent holdings. 3Ir. Shine's position in the matter was -well taken and merited the board's consideration. Yet, after ex pressing his belief that no property in ihe county was assessed to a ques tionable cash valuation, we cannot tinderstand the plea to the board to equalize the assessment and not go ito the trouble of notifying the nu merous property holders of the inten sion to raise their valuations, if it were not a plea for a reduction on the Southern Oregon Company's Tholdings. .Mr. Shine certainly advocated the reduction of the Company's holdings as being the most feasible adjust ment for the present year, and a re adjustment of all valuations when he next assessment is made. would be pleased to verify the correctness of thebe statements by Ifjavlng anyone interested interview tt.no members of the board and In spect the petition and plea filed of record by the Southern Oregon Com pany. Respectfully yours, T. J. THRIFT. YOUNG GIRL DIES. XSr-arlet Favor Futnl to Roland Girl. Otlii'i-s Are Sick. Editor Times: Sir: I hope the people of Coos county will see that Assessor Thrift eivps Etnnlrn a smiare deal. I don't jbeHeve ,n cards but SqUare dear ,g what Mr shIne sa,d we want and I think the assessor should be on the square with us. North Bend and Marshfield each larger than Empire and are why should they not be taxed higher ac cordingly. The Marshfield district for instance has 732 school children and Empire only 42, or less than one seventh as many. Why should not Marshfield pay seventeen times as much tax? Then at Marshfield is a modern mill said to be the most up-to-date in the world, and in North Bend are the Simpson mills and fac tories. Here the mill wheels have not turned for ten years. This should increase the proportionate rate of as sessment and taxation for the up-bay towns. Though the population of both. North Bend and Marshfield, is much larger than that of Empire, the population of Marshfield, for ex ample, is probably nine times that of Empire. On that basis why should not Marshfield property be assessed nine times as high as Empire prop erty owners? Again, North Bend and" Marshfield are farther from the ocean than Empire and the distance from the bar should be taken into consld- eration in fixing assessment valua tions. Marshfield, at the head of the bay, should certainly be assessed" higher than towns near the sea. Al together, property owners at the head of the bay, conservatively speaking, should be assessed at about thirty times the valuation of similar property on the lower bay. For in stance, if a lot Is valued at $100 in Empire the same lot should be valu ed at $3,000 in Marshfield. We do not wish to interfere with anv one ejse's assessment, but the actlve mnis, new brick blocks, fac- torles and towns of paved streets, the Oregon Coal and Navigation Com pany, the Flanagan estate and Mer chant estate should surely pay thirty times as high a rate as Empire, and the rest of the Southern Oregon Com pany.
