When the last speaker has finished, And the ballots shall fall in the slot, When the tariff and all of the Issues Are folded away and forgot We shall rest and gads, we shall need It, A season of quiet and still, And none shall be suffered to utter That short monosyllable, Bill. And only our wives shall harangue us, And no one shall make a to-do Of sundry alarums that strike us As quite unimportant if true. The partisan pleader shall vanish, The seer and the prophet of ill, And there'll be no occasion to utter That short monosyllable, Bill. The days shall be given to thinking, And each man shall think for himself; The thoughts of the statesmen to problems And the friends of the poor their pelf. to The trusts shall resume with the harvest, And the people shall bow to their will" But we'll live and rejoice in forget ting That short monosyllable, Bill. The Intense Interest felt locally In the result of the presidential elec tion yesterday was shown by the crowd of between 500 and 1,000 that surrounded the corner of 'A' and Front streets last night to see the re- ! turns as flashed on a curtain across from the Mhlicoma Club. The crowd came early and remained late, watch ing intently the bulletins from the various cities and states showing the trend of the vote G. W. Cai eton who operated the spe ial Western Union Wire to the Milllcoma Club rooms, began receiv ing the bulletins before G o'clock and continued until 12 o'clock last night. The service was good, bulle tins being received In rapid succes sion and being instantly thrown on the screen across from the club. The members of tho club filled the rooms all evening. When the bulletins from New York began to come, showing a land slide there for Taft, the crowd cheer ed lustily. s tho later returns continued to show Taft gaining in New York with indications that he would carry the other eastern states by good majo rltles, the crowd continued to give vent to its cnthuslams. Many women were in the crowd, watching the bulletins almost as in tently as the men. That Taft should run ps well as the bulletins Indicated, was a sur prise to everybody In tho crowd While the great majority of the ciowd had hoped for a Republican victory, their actions and talk early In the evening Indicate more or less misgiving on- their part. Theie wore many expressions of gratitude to tho Millloma Club for Its couitesy and generosity In fur nishing tho returns for the general public. At first, whon tho club ar ranged to secure the returns, It was Intended that It should bo only for tho members but President C. W. Tower, W. W. McFnrland and others suggested that it would bo conve nient to tho public in general to dis play tho returns and it was promptly ncted 'upon. COL. WM. GRIMES - CONGRATULATES TAFT C 1, Win. Returns Come In Slowly From Outlying Precincts Today. Despite the indications early yes terday, only about two-thirds of the full vote was polled In Coos county. While the weather was good, many did not take tho bother to get out and vote, there being no state or local contests to interest them. Reports from the various precincts are coming In very slowly today, lb being Impossible to secure the vote In several precincts despite the ef-. forts of The Times and County Clerk Watson to obtain the figures. The indications are that the county will give Taft a greater majority, even proportionate to the total vote, than it did Roosevelt four years ago. Des pite the Republican gains, Eugene , V. Debs, the Socialist candidate, made a big showing. Election day passed off quietly at all points. There was some betting in Marshfleld but big odds , were given on Taft, one party betting $100 to ?10 that Taft would win. Sey mour H. Bell, general manager of the Coos Bay Gas and Electric Com pany, had a number of bets posted and made a few, most of which he lost. Col. Wm. Grimes and others are said to have called him on his boasting of Bryan gains and he fail ed to come through. In North Marshfleld, about twenty ballots were spoiled and had to be thrown out. In North Marshfleld, eleven were thrown out. The count In North Marshfleld was completed about 8:30, but it was much later before the count was completed in South Marshfleld, owing to the lar ger number of votes. In North Marshfleld, fifty-three votes were sworn in, and South Marshfleld seventy-four. This makes the total number of legal voters in the city about 1,000. Chafln, the Prohibition candidate, and Hisgen, the Independence party candidate, polled very few votes in the county.
