While the Republican party was JU-otight into being by the tolling musses and has achieved all its suc cesses through their unfailing support, it has lgorously opposed every at tempt to require American wage earn ers to vote collectively, either in obedi ence to political bosses or ns directed "by belf fctjled "labor leaders" who sometimes lead, but rarely labor. The Republican doctilne Is that every citi zen with a legitimate vocation who does his best day by day is a laboring man In the truest sense of the term and that the so called "labor question" as related to party action Is one which -must be settled by every individual for "himself through such political agencies and organizations as he mny consider xnost trustworthy. The Democratic party, however, has sedulously sought and Is still seeking to establish an antagonism of Interest between grades of labor whose Inter ests are Identical. It would have the worker in the mill believe that the mill owner Is his enemy. It would have employer nnd employee constant ly at war. though each knows that neither can prosper unless both are content JYherever or whenever a difference arises between one group of laborers, who may be the Immediate producers of a given community, and another group, charged with the equally Important task of finding markets nnd consumers for the product, the Democratic party uses the event as the protest for a further appeal to the spirit of preju dice and passion, always attempting to excite hostility between employer and emploj ee. In nil such cases the principle and practice of the Republican party are ex nctly the reverse. It holds that con troversies between employer nnd em ployee nro nlmoht invarinbly due to a (misunderstanding of their inutunl In terests and that a frank appeal to the rrenson and fair miudedness of those .concerned is all that Is needed to effect an agreement honorable to both sides. The Democratic party rejoices In dis cord among the makers of national .greatness. It fattens on public mls fortune. It finds In every misunder standing between employer nnd em ployee nn excuse for the sinister hint that those who are In the market to l)iiy labor arc the natural enemies of those who have labor to sell. On the other hand, the Republican party leeognls'os any serious disagree ment between the sellers nnd tho buy ers of lnbor botwepu the employee nnd .the employer ns a matter of gravo concern to tho general welfare, requir ing enreful nonpartisan scrutiny nnd wise legislation to protect tho common interests of tho people. Tho Repub lican party has neer rejoiced In hard times. It has never applauded a panic" -or an era of business depression. It Is the party of prosperity, not of calam ity. It Is strongest when tho people .are happiest. It glories in their suc cesses, grieves for their misfortunes nnd disdains to seek political advan tages in public disaster. The leal "labor vote" in this couutry is the American people. They mako and mar the destinies of parties nnd 'candidates. Nothing Is so hnteful to them as tho assumption that they can bo delivered like sheep in tho shambles to any nominee of nny party. This year's campaign Is n frank appeal to the intelligence nnd patriotism of tho American "labor vote," nnd tho party which gave three martyrs Lincoln, Gnrfleld nnd McKlnley to tho cause of tho common people will nccopt tho No vember verdict ns ouo of thoso Judg ements which nro "truo nnd righteous valtocether." isow Is tho timo to got busy in Tho Times' Prlzo Contest. The Past has burned In curling haze, The Future is an ungrown tree, A peach or lemon we shall see. But stark and bare is last year'd bough, Bank not on either as for me I sing the cheering song of Now. Give Hope and Memory a rest, Too long you've had them at your beck; There are no birds In last year's nest. You pay no bills with last year's check. Your hopes may get it in the neck, Your rainbow's end rest in a slough, I Let others celebrate Hope's wreck, I sing the cheering song of Now. Let Memory smooth the furrowed brow Of him who's made his little pile; Let Hope sit on the drifting prow Of him who'll make It "after 'while;" Let Memory's dream and Hope's sly smile With brightest glamour them en dow; Let Past and Future them beguile I sing the cheering song of Now. MARCO MORROW. It Is getting so that a man can't rest secure in the possession of his rainy day fund so long as anything is left in either him or his wife that the doctors can cut out. Sometimes I think the real test of a thoroughbred and that means the highest test of manliness orwoman llness, coisists in paying tho price for what you have had without a murmur. Children act very badly sometimes, but parents never dream of having them sent to insane asylums. Cases are reported every day of children having their parents caged up for acting foolish. Woman suffragists at a convention discussed the problem of what they could do with the ballot. In the pri mary election out here In Oregon, they could have covered the pantry shelves and had several yards left. Most men who die prematurely die either of stomach or kidney trouble, the result of overeating and over drinking. Women live Itfnger than men; half the women "diet." If the men don't do more of it, there will not bo enough men left after a while to hold an election. Household Hints. To make biscuits light drench with gasoline and Ignite before serv ing. How to keep servants chloroform them and lock In tho cellar. Quickest way to get rid of ped dlers buy all they have. How to removo fruit stains from linen use scissors. To keep rats out of tho pantry placo all food in tho cellar. To entertain women visitors let them Inspect all your private papers. To ontertain men visitors feed tho brutes. To keep tho children at home lock up all their clothes. To keep hubby at home hide his toupee. In ordor to prevent accidents in tho kitchen fill tho kerosene can with wnter. To stop leaks In pipes send for tho nearest plumber. To economize on coal get a gas range. To tost tho freshness of eggs drop them on some hard surface FRESH Olympla or Toko Point Oysters by pint, quart or gallon at O. K. CHOP HOUSE. Road the Times' Want Ads. ROSEBURG OPTIMISTIC.
