THE DAILY COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD, OREGON, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1908. THE COOSILE VOL. 1 LOCAL NEWS. Xiltlc Happenings In the Suburbs Gleaned by Our Reporters. Sylvester Gilpin is quite proud of his daughter who has become quite accomplished as a tight rope walker in Steve Gullion's side show. Jake Goldie's patent hen persuad er, took first premium at the State fair. It Is guaranteed to make a hen lay two double yolk eggs perday. Bert DImmick is getting up a class in accordion music. Burt is a grad uate of the Mudsock school of music and has opera music down to the queen's taste. Aunt Mahala Cronkhite has traded Tier last churning of butter at Pete Slocum's grocery yesterday for cas tor oil and other family necessities. Constipation seems to run in the Cronkhite family. Oat DIngman got paid $500 in surance money on his wife's death last week and has been making many 3Twolvo Years of National Progress. It Is Just twelve years since William Jennings Bryan was marching up and down the country proclaiming that tho gold standard was a conspiracy against tho human race and that, If elected, It would remain in operation no longer than he could get rid of it. It was Bhown at that time that the civilized nations of the world had been forging ahead with considerable rapidity in the savings of the masses, the increase In wages and the improvement in stand ards of living. Nearly all of them at that time were parties to the conspir acy in favor of tho gold standard, nnd they have since been Joined by Russia, Japan, Mexico and the United States. tThcso twelve years have been beyond question years of the most tremendous expansion in the producing power of tho human race over witnessed in an cient or modern times. The nnclent world was without that great equip ment of improved machinery which has Increased, by two or three fold probably upon tho average, the abil ity of tho human hand and brain. Of this prosperity the United States has had Its full share. The election of President McIClnley In November, 1800, was the signal that the American peoplo repudiated Mr. Bryan's violent aind revolutionary attacks upon tho monetary system established on tho resumption of specie payments in 1S79. It remained, however, for congress to enact Into law this decision in favor of tho gold standard. This occurred liy tho act of March 14, 1000. Tho re sults of Bryan's defeat nnd the enact ment of tho gold standard law were to inspire general confidence In the future of tho country. Business ac quired great expansion, savings de posits enormously increased, export trade more than doubled, nnd tho sup ply of money employed in carrying on this vast business was also greatly in creased. A few figures Illustrating these facts nro more eloquent than pages of arguinont. The following ta ble shows the amount of deposits In three classes of banking Institutions for tho year 1S90. when Brjan's cam paign against the gold standard .was on; for 1000, tho year when the gold -standard was enacted, nnd for the cur rent fiscal year: Nntlorml Stato Savins Year. banks. The number of depositors In savings banks alone, which wnn C,00n,-l!)l In ISOll, Increased to G.lOT.CSl in 1000 and to 8.703.SJ8 in 100S. There Is thus an average of one depositor i"or more than one-half tho families of the United States. The growth In the foreign trade of the country has resulted In tho sale of American products abroad equal In money value to inoro than twice tho amount sold in 181KI. Imports have not increased in quite the same pro portion as exports, but they show nn Increase of more than CO per cent within tho twelve years. A SUMMER IDYL. (Dedicatory to William H. Kennedy.) She was a winsome country lass; So William ( on a brief vacation, More pleasantly the time to pass, Essayed flirtation; And as they strolled In twilight dim, While near the time for parting drew, Asked if she'd like to have from him A billet-doux. Of French this simple maid knew naught, But, doubting not 'twas something nice Upon its meaning quickly thought, Then in a thrice Upward she turned her pretty head; Her rosy lips together drew For purpose plain, and coyly said "Yes, Billy, do." Where Bryan and his policies had expelled gold until the entire stock of the country was only a little more than $500,000,000, there is now nearly three times this amount. Even silver has been called Into use for subsidiary coins and other purposes to an extent which has Increased the amount In cir culation by 50 per cent. If money is wealth, then the following table of tho amount In circulation for tho years under consideration shows that the wealth of the country In this respect has practically doubled since tho coun try was warned against the conspiracy In favor of the gold standard: MONETARY CIRCULATION OP THE UNITED STATES. And the verdict of history will be that he was thrice defeated on hlo demerits. Tho last argument of the New York gamblers is to lay bets against nughes. But they will be provident enough to hedge. I The country has weathered success fully a business tempest. The grateful shipowners will re-engage the faithful , crew. Taft's New York Mujorlty. Those people, east and west, who are looking anxiously for political signs should not miss one of the largest significance regarding the re sult In the Empire State of New York. Upper Manhattan Island that Is, the upper part of the old city of New York which Is mainly Republican, shows a large Increase of registration, while those sections of the lower part of tho city, from which Tainmany draws Its fraudulent majorities, shows an equnlly significant decrease. While the Increase In upper Now York proves that the Intelligent population of that section Is rallying with greater ear nestness than ever to the support of Tnft and Sherman and of a Republlc nn administration in the Interest of nil that tends to mnke tho country pros perous, tho decreased registration from tho haunts of Tammany thugs and repeaters Indicates that the Re publican vote Is not to be offset this year by fraudulent Democratic ballots. It Is and has been for years n crying shame that the vote of the great and often pivotal state of Now York should be so largely affected by ballot box stutters, who appear to have been, ac cording to sworn evidence In recent cases, In the pay of politicians closely connected with Democratic local lead ership and acting In the Interest of Democrat! candidates. The Republic an legislature of New York has bought to remedy this wrong by surrounding registration with certain safeguards which do not hamper the honest voter, no matter how illiterate or poor he may be, but which are cahiilated to deter the repeater and ballot box stutter from going to the polls. The fact that thousands have been afraid to face the test is proof of the extent to which fraud has figured In New York city elections In tho past and is also an assurance, along with Increas ed Republican registration, that tho majority for Tnft nnd Shermui In tho Umpire State will exceed considerably tho connervatlvo estimates made ear "ler In the campaign.
