Recently compiled statistics show that the medical schools of the na tion have awarded over 4,000 diplo mas less this year than in 190C and 1,674 fewer than were granted last " year. The record was broken in 190G when diplomas were awarded to 25,204 young medical .college graduates, many of whom in the opinion of the American Medical as sociation, were not properly equip ped for the serious duty of caring for the 111. The unusually large crop of fledg ling physicians in 190G started a crusade for the Investigation of some .of the many schools of the country that granted diplomas after a two or three years' course of study that was never very exacting in its require ments. The leading physicians still 'insist that about half of the 160 medical schools of the country "have ' no moral right to exist," but the agitation of the subject has resulted in a lengthening of the course of .study and a stiffening of the require--ments to graduation. Higher stand ards are Imposed and the public as well as the profession will bo bene ifi'ted by the change. One of the requirements of most of the high grade medical colleges of the day Is that the students shall Tbo college graduates before they en ter upon the medical course of study. The effect of this Is to start .the now medical student In the study of his profession with a mental train ing that will enable him to have a better understanding of the newer pathology and the more advanced work of medical research. With this change comes the passing of the old country doctor, the man who was a guide, counselor and friend, as well as the physician of his patients. His school of training is practically closed to the medical student of today, and tho fact will bo regret ted 1y somo of the older folks. Tho old country physician knew men and women, even if ho did not know aB much of science as tho holder of the medical diploma today. Whilo ho may bo passing, It Is refreshing to learn that his successors will here after bo thoroughly trained nnd edu cated men and not tho graduates of colleges that have- been organized as .dlploma mills. As this refrain: "I love you dear. i "I love you dear!" There is no change as time goes on, No new words seem to mean so much As when they're uttered fondly near In trembling tones: "I love you dear." "I love you dear!" No night so dark, no day so long, But hope brings comfort to the heart, If only "some one" standeth near To murmur low: "I love you, dear." ANON. There was appointed by a San Francisco church a committee to get subscriptions for a chime of bells. They had seen nearly all the congre gation. When they went to see a rather tight-fisted member they told him they would like a small amount toward It. He promised to give as much as he could, but he said: "Don't you think it would be cheap er to put a whistlo In?" THE TOET'S CORNER. Though prosperity's returned. Even yet It's right hard sledding For some young folks who have yearned For a nice November wedding. W. H. KENNEDY. "I have my eyes on you!" The young man sang. Said she: "You are very slow, For my other beau Has a band of gold on me!" REX LARGE. Content the kicker doth decide, Is quite a power for harm. This tendency to point with pride He viewed with alarm. THE CRITIC. Trouble makes a lot of noise; Hardly over hear our joys! Trouble is a rampant fellow; Joy Is gentle, joy Is mellow; Trouble talks with roar of thund er; Joy Is soft as whispered wonder; Trouble makes a lot of fuss; Joy does 'does quiet good to us. THE OPTIMIST. Said tho winsome little maidon; "If tho kiss Is microbe-laden, Then this kisslng's unhygienic, there Is no doubt, But, considering circumstances, I prefer to tako my chances, Than to catch tho 'Old Maid Microbe,' as I might without."
