Good poems are not written By the comfortable' man, Who feels the balm of perfect calm Throughout his being's plan. But let some pleasure shake him With sudden joy egad, I'll write in style that's worth while, When I am glad! the NATIONAL REPUBLICAN TICKET For President, "WILLIAM II. TAFT. Of Ohio For Vice President, JA.MES S. SHERMAN Of New York. Presidential Electors, J. D. Lee, of Multnomah county. F. J. Miller, of Linn County. A, C. Marsters, of Douglas county. JR. R. Butler, of Gilliam county. EVERY REPUBLICAN'S DUTY. "The shnllows murmur while the deeps are dumb" is a snj;Ing to be kept in mind in the present stage of the na tional campaign. The firm, settled pur pose of the great majority of voters . that Republican rule shall continue, that Tuft and Sherman shall be elected president and vice president of the United States and that the candidate of free silver and free trade, of finan cial chaos and public discredit, shall not bo allowed to make the national government a subject for his mounte bank schemes and crazy experiments -accounts for much that is called apathy A large proportion of the votprs do not deem It necessary to ndvertise their own sanity by demonstrations such as hae attended great crises In the past They regard the two previous rejee--tlons of Bryanlsm as proof abundant that the coming election will go the Baine way and that the country Is in no dunger of surrender to the twice beaten charlatan, whose political rec ord Is the best evidence that he has no real principles and Is willing to be anything that he thinks will tickle the galleries. That this feeling is preva lent is obvious to any one taking the trouble to make personal Inquiry iimoug business men. worklngmen and the professions. It is not well, however, that Repub licans bhould be content with meaning .to do right themselves. The number of those who are liable to be influ enced by Bryan's sophistries, by his utterly unfounded but constantly re Iterated aspersions, his plausible fal lack's and deliberate falsehoods, al though small as compared with tho total of the electorate. Is not to be ignored, and no effort should bo spared to bring them to a due appreciation of their obligations to the country and to theinsehes. The time has come for tsvery Republican to make himself a missionary in behalf of Taft and Slier man, to speak out his own thoughts and to influence as far as possible tho opinions of others concerning the is sues at stake In the pending cam paign. The fact that Intelligent citi zens everywhere believe that Taft will be elected Is not enough. Tho voting .population Includes a considerable pro portion of those who require some stimulus toward a correct and eompre heuslvo grasp of what is at stako In -the contest, of tho widespread disaster that Brynn's success would bring upon business, now hnpplly emerging from recent depression: of tho collapse of tho Btrncture of national credit that his moro presence at the bond of the government would undoubtedly in volve, of tho utter untrustworthlness of tho man and of his cowardly refugo In reckless denunciation nnd prevarica tion to divert attention from his career of blundering egotism. Don't rest with being right yourself. Seo that your neighbor is right. He will listen to you if you frame your arguments in frank nnd friendly ex pression. Facts and reason nro all -with tho Republican party and its chosen leaders, and a clear, temperate presentation of the facts cannot fall to impress. Every Republican, we re peat,' should bo n missionary for tho cause nnd tho candidates of the Re publican party and not of tho Repub lican party alone, but of n host of others who will help to swell tho vote for Taft nnd Sherman, for elllclent nnd impartial administration, for a -"forward march" nnd not n retreat In tho country's progress at homo nnd nbrond for, iu n word, all that goes to mako tho United States tho bat country to live in on tho fnco of tho .globe. But, let the world insult me With foul Injustice done By deed or pen to fellow men (Or me), look out for fun! Oh, then the hidden genius Breaks forth in me, my lad" I sure can do a thing or two, When I am mad! ANON. A dispatch from Helena tells of a man being blown up. It's dollars to doughnuts he was married. A Chicago woman left her husband ?1 in Ijer will. Perhaps if he hadn't left her so much while she was alive she would have done better. Ted "What became of that fellow who used to rock the boat?" Ned "Oh, he's rocking the cradle of the de"ep." There is really no way of ascertain ing whether the man who has had" no vacation wants it any more than the man who has had one wants another. Three pretty girl immigrants were married on a steamship. This Keats the groom who got his girl in a bathing suit and" then took her oar to see. Mrs. Midge "I wonder what in the world Jonah thought when ho was swallowed by the whale?" Midge "He probably had air Idea that he had got into a sheath gown." "How much did you pay thtr min ister when we were married?" a Coos Bay woman asked her husband the other evening. "He fined mo ?5," the husband re plied without looking up from his paper. enthusiastic "You are not very about the election." "Nope," answered Farmer Corn tossel. "The nearest I kin ever git to enthusiasm in any election is to persuade myself to cheer up an' hope fur the best." "Susie," said Mrs. Sincaller to her daughter, "you need not be so crazy after tho boys. There are always plenty of men. You look a good deal like mo and I got married." "But, mother," replied Susie, "you married father." They were speaking of a new ac quaintance at tho Mllllcoma tho other evening when Russ Tower re markod to John Goss, "and so ho didn't impress you favorably, then." "No," Goss replied, "he's just a bungalow." "A what?" Russ questioned. "A bungalow. He hasn't any foundation." Marshfield City Board of Health Outlines New Phases of Menace of Insects. To the public: The International Congress on Tuberculosis held at Washington, D. C, from September 28 to October 3, 1908, reported investigations on the dissemination of tuberculosis" by the common house fly as fellows: 1. Flies caught in the open air do1 not contain any acid-fast bacilli (germs) that could be mistaken for the bacillus of tuberculosis. 2. Flies that have been fed cm spu tum evacuate considerable quan tities of bacilli in their excretions. The bacilli appear six hours after their ingestion of the sputum and some may be found as long as five days later. Thescr flies therefore, have plenty of time to carry these bacilli tc a great distance and to contaminate food in houses appa rently protected from contagion, because not inhabited by a con sumptive. J. Food polluted by flies that have fed on sputum contains Infective bacilli and produces tuberculosis in guinea pigs. 1. Flies readily absorb bacilli con tained" In dry dust. . Flies caught at random In a hos pital ward" of consumptives prod uce tuberculosis In the guinea pigs. Conclusions. The sputum and ex cretions of tuberculosis subjects must be disinfected; flies shonld be destroyed as completely as possible; foodstuffs should bo protected by means of covers made of wire' gauze. In connection with the above Impor tant findings of the congress, the City Board of Health- desires again to call attention to the great necessity of exterminating files and keeping-them away from food stuffs and eating utensils; keep them out of your house and destroy their breeding ground which Is decomposing- ani mal and vegetable matter. Refuse matter from the kitchen thrown in the back yard and slmflar sources, of filth are productive of danger to the Inhabitants in the neighborhood" and should" be energetically removed. Spittltr and excretions from sick: patients-should be-disinfected and" ren dered harmless by appropriate meas ures. MARSHFIELD CITY BCPAHD OF HEALTH. TREN GTH BOOST FOR COOS BAY. Gray, secretary and treas urer of the California & Oregon Coast Steamship Company, owner of the Alliance and Nome City. Mr. Gray has been in the Coos Bay coun try from San Francisco for several" weeks, looking into the trade possi bilities of that section. He says it Is a great and growing region, with which Portland merchants ought to be in closer touch. "By the purchase the other day of half the output of the new white cedar shingle mills at Bandon, Port landers, took a step In the- right di rection toward increasing the com merce between Coos Bay and the Oregon metropolis," said Mr. Gray this morning. "Portland should get practically all of the trade down that way. But San Francisco appears to have secured a strong foothold there?. It would be the easiest matter in the world for the merchants of this city to dislodge the Callfornians from that field If they would go about It in a determined manner. It is much closer to Portland, and this city en joys every natural advantage to win the business."
