Represent 128 Electoral Votes Taft Needs HI of Them, Bryan 81. NEW YORK, Oct. 5. A compar ison of the claims of both parties shows that an even dozen states aro included in tho doubtful column by tho forecasters at tho headquarters of one or both parties. These com monwealths aro Now York, New Jer sey, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, West Virginia, Utah, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Some of these states aro claimed as certainly Republican by tho leaders of that party, while others aro just as certainly placed In tho Democratic column by the sup porters of Bryan. Tho principal bat tles of tho campaign will bo fought in these twelve states, with Now York and Indiana tho most import ant scenes of contention. Tho twelve states which are placed by ono party or tho other in tho doubtful column havo a total elec toral vote of 128. In other states which are considered as reasonably certain to givo decisive majorities, tho Republicans can depend upon 191 olectoral votes and the Demo crats 161. If tho Republicans can gain 40 electoral votes from tho doubtful territory, according to this showing. Mr. Taft will bo tho npxt president of tho United States. On tho'other hand, If tho Democrats car ry tho doubtful territory to tho ox tent of winning 81 olectoral votes, Mr. Bryan will be tho, next occupant of tho White House. " If tho Republicans can carry Now York and Indiana, Taft nnd Sherman will almost certainly havo a safo margin in tho electoral college. Un less tho unexpected happens and some of the states normally Repub lican should go for Bryan. Tho Democrats will havo to secure 27 electoral votes from tho other doubt ful states. In addition to carrying Now York and Indiana, in order to elect Bryan and Kern. California is placed In tho doubtful column by tho Democrats, whllo Wisconsin and Now Jersey, considered doubtful by Dem ocratic prophets, are listed as cer tainly Republican by tho Taft men. Admission of theso claims would chango but slightly the results as here given, and the great fight for supremacy will bo in tho states men tioned. MEET IN ROSEBURG.
