Lumber Mnikot Better. Alfred Johnson, Sr., president of the John son Lumber Company at Coqullle, was In the city today on his return from San Francisco on a business trip. Mr. Johnson reports that busi ness In that city Is picking up and that tho lumber market is becoming stronger and with prices a Httlo higher, though in his opinion, It would not help tho mills any as tho prices for logs havo been advanced. FRENCH arrived from Salinas, Cal., yesterday to visit his wlfo at the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. T. McCoimac. Mrs. French will accompany him back to Salinas in a few weeks If her health will permit. A. S. HAMMOND of Coqullle, was In Marshfleld today with Mrs. Ham mond who Is about to leavo for Portland and other northern points. While sho Is away, Mr. Hammond Is planning on an ox tended fishing trip. G. W. GREGG, who has been at tho hospital hero for tho past few weeks being treated for injuries received at Smith-Powers logging camp on Cunningham Creek, re turned to his homo at Coqullle this afternoon. MISS LAURA ESCOTT will close an eight months term of school on Coos River Friday. This Is tho third year that sho has taught suc cessfully there. The dipthorla scare caused many pupils to quit and consequently no program will bo held tho last day. MISS MAUDE PAINTER loft on tho M. F. Plant this afternoon for Tuioa, Okla., where she will spend the winter with her sister, Mrs. Rice.
