Oregon The policy of the Coos Bay T1ijs Will h Republican in politics, with the independence of which Fresi lout 'tcosevelt is the leading exponent 1V1IERE ARE THE HARD TIMES? Discussing this question the In dianapolis Star presents the situation in this form. It is a good jolt to the habit of &o many people who, no matter what the prevailing condition of the country may be, are sure to speak of "the hard times." The Star says: "The Indianapolis citizen going .about his business from day to day hears more or less talk about hard times. The man next him on the street car in the morning discourses gloomily of 'prospects' and considers the outlook discouraging, yet the citi zen happens to know that the speaker lias lately purchased a sixty-horse power, hlghgrado automobile and, what is more, has paid for it. 'The citizen's next door neighbor strolls across the lawn in the even ing to remark lugubriously that he sojs no likelihood of better times coming soon, and the citizen casually rxJlect8 thai the, neighbor sent his wifo and daughter to Euiope this summer for the flr&t time and had himself taken an ex'ienslve outing Jn this connection, too, the citizen recalls the statements made by bever jil persons in a position to know to the effect that more people bad taken out-of-town trips this season than over before. Ho liears talk about men out of work, but remembers that VJien ho has needed the services of a number of laborers on several oc casions this season ho h.is found it as difficult to sectue them as in for mer years. Altogether ho is forced to wonder if times really are hard. -"If ho considers the situation that presents itself this week ho will be more in doubt than ever. Last Mon day showed no less than 13,000 paid admissions to the state fair an in creaso of over 10,000 above the num bers on tho corresponding days In tKOC nnd 1907. On tho same day wrb two games of baseball, with a total attendance of something near :iG,000. Later days ot the fair ha. nl o ali'wn an Increase in paid nt icuulanre over former years Wed nesday having 9000 more than 190G and 2000 more than 1907 On Wort ni iday, too, ncaily ir,"00 people witnessed tho bullgumo between the Indianapolis and Toledo clubs. In addition to the fair nnd the ball game crowds havo thronged to the local amusement paiks and the theater and tho bhops have been filled. "Now, the presence of tho crowds at theso places means a great outla of inonej Farmers have had it to spend oi they would not have come jn greater numbers than ovor before from all parts of the stato, with their families, to attend the fair and do their fall buying. The crowds at the ball games wore not men out of -work, but men with mone In their .pockets, who felt that they could af ford the recreation. A great amount of money has boon spent this week hy tho visiting crowds In rnilroad f.uos, In uilriiuco fees to tho fair ;ind to places of amusement nnd in the pun-babe of merchnndiso more than was spent last year nnd tho jwr boforo, because tho crowds have boon lnrgor. This does not mean hard times; it moans prosper ity. Then what has bocomo of tho haul times? Is it not that too ninny of ih have fallen Into tho habit of iisjuunliig that thoy aro still hero, -without considering the facts' Or Is it that wo give too much heed to tho talk, of political domagoguos?" y B Wiv!
