'WWWiJjSiBMmuBBiaM THE DAILY COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD, OREGON, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1908. II 1 NEAPS EARTH REGULAR THREE-QUARTER CEN TURV VISIT OF ASTRAL BODY' ATTRACTS -MUCH ATTENTION FROM SCIENTISTS. WASHINGTON", Sept. 24. As tronomers at the naval observatory are not paying much attention to the return of Halley's comet, which la now approaching the earth. This I comet makes an appearance every 75 t years, and Is the oldest colestlal i wanderer known to earth-people, j ' least half a dozen young women were I on their feet expostulating against such talk from the pulpit. "You're a nebby thing and ought to be ashamed of yourself. You ought to be horsewhipped," said one of the cholr-slngers to the minister as she left the choir corner with the rest. "At least you should resign." i "1 will, sister. lust as soon as the congregation can raise the two months' back salary that Is due me," said the minister calmly. "We will see that you get your salary and that you keep your prom ise to quit," shouted a rather stout lady of the congregation, who was evidently partial to the powder puff. And the girls are keeping their promise. They say that they will have enough money soon to force the minister to get out, according to his promise. Do not torget that DeWItt's Little Early Risers are the best pills made. They are pleasant little pills that are easy to take and are prompt and gentle. We sell and recommend them. Scientific observations since the inception of the modern science of astronomy show that its orbit varied little and that it may be confidently expected according to schedule time. While Washington astronomers are not taking observation, several western observatories have made pre- Tinrntlnna in nhntnprnnh thn comet. 5 j and should their efforts develop any- t thing of value, the naval observatory will later take up the comet quest. With the announcement of every returning comet superstitious people Immediately begin to entertain ab surd fears of what might happen in case of a collision. While not deny ing that such a collision is possible, and that conditions might develop which would render It disastrous, most astronomers assert that such a disaster is so remote as to be almost unthinkable. Some scientists believe that life was extinguished on the earth more than once by flre3 generated by com ets and that the growth of human, animal and vegetable life had to be gin all over again and took millions of years to reach its present develop ment. A comet, in brief, is a bit of some planet which has cracked off and Is flying rapidly through space. It is intensely hot. It generates enormous heat by its friction going through the ether. Every such comet, while meas uring perhaps thousands of miles in diameter at the head, carries with it a sort of burning atmosphere of its own, which precedes it for some dis tance and trails out behind it for hundreds of thousands of miles. This forms what Is known as tl.o "tall" of the comet. Some comets hae been declared to hnve tails millions of miles In length which stretch across the heavens. Meteorites, which are fragments of comets, have destroyed ships at sea and made huge holes in the earth. Many of theso have fallen in the southwest, which seems to be a favor ito place for meteorites, and the des ert of Arizona is pitted with holes which many minors believe were mado by such visitors. Tho earth came in contact with tho tall of n comet on Juno 30, 1861. 1 Tho tail was IIS degrees long. Many people thought it caused tho Civil . War. The comet nppcared low down toward the horizon In tho Northwest and went over to tho Southwest. Tho wliolo heavens as wo seo them are only ISO degrees. So our comet struck across almost tho whole heav ens. Wo wore buried Into tho substance of that comet's tail 300,000 miles. And thero was not the slightest thing by which anybody could know what happened. There was not oen a haze. Tho talis of comets nro so thin, so tenuous, that It Is almost impossible to put it in words. Through tho nucleus or head of a comet tho light of a fifth magnltudo star passes without any diminution. Tlioro nro dozens of lost comets known to nbtronomy. Theso mon sters of tho sky hovo into sight, as tonished everybody by their brillian cy and had their orbits calculated and then when the nstrononiors pre dicted they were going to reappear they novor returned and tho astro nomers wore covered with confusion.
