Shla matter muBt not bo reprinted with out special permission. Back to Nature and Sanity, oro is n truthful account of the v-tky I became editor of n farm. had been a newspaper man for enty years. For practically all that lo-I had lived lu cities, the last five irs having been spent lu that most wded and maddest of all cities, York. thought I liked It. I was as mad tho rest We wore all obsessed tho lights, the motion and tho brlsh chase of sensation. Wo were tont to live on the suifaco until wo ;ot thero Is anything but suiface lo who are quite Inbiuio think ono mad but themselves, and I -Jilly found victims of Broadway- s. . ivno imacinca an wno uo not live -Tanhattan Island a little nuecr. ff"'fei8Uw what a hold tho disease had on mo, I was deluded ciiougu to marry In tho city and to rear my children there I do not know what brought m to sanity at last, whether some hid den hypnotist behind the scenes sud denly said "Right" or whether my soul asserted Itself and caused me to look at things In a normal manner. At any rate, I mado up my mind one spring morning that wo had been pur suing the glitter and leaving tho real light Even city walls, sinoko and nolso cannot stlflo all of nature's magic on a May morning. I suddenly saw things clearly. I had not been doing my duty to tho beings dependent on mo, I owed It to them to let them grow and bo as nature and God ln- ded to take them out of the ab- vijjiai ana overcuargeu air or ino town Into tho sweet breath of tho open country. I have often observed that when one really makes up his mind to do a "thing, and it is tlio right thing for him to do, the way appears. I get more actual satisfaction out of believing in God than from nnythlng elso I do. Tho way appeared In this case. A friend living fifty miles from tho city, Tar enough to bo frco from the zone In which nature W tamed and tamo Invited mo out for a day. We climbed totho top of a mountain, and thero I discovered a new world. It was not an outer revelation, but an Inner. I was a Columbus who had discovered myself. I found I had a soul. I had been told that before, but never moio than half believed It. That view on tho mountain top revealed more than tLlandscapo. I b.iw vlstus leading off Into undiscovered countries. I walked on tho delectable mountains. I drank at tho springs of beauty. For ono wild, sweet moment I even dreamed tnnt I saw the smllo of God. At" tho foot of that mountain, nes tling" botween It and tho ilvcr, I found a quaint, half abandoned, little, old farm. I thereupon hugged it to my bosom and have never let It go. It was not till tho next day I real ized the problem was but half solved. d seen my promised laud, but not enter in. I was still under 'session of cities, still a slave of eel. My work would not let mo Mor so tho remnant of my mad- Id to mo. The best 1 coma was that I might dlo on tho rm, but could not llvo thero. I reckoned, as wo all do, wlth- loving kindness that shapes ways far better than wo had 1 or deserved. I have no quarrel, understand, with people who wish to drink nostrums or booze. I am only stating my own preference. Give me a wheel, a hore or n iod and reel, then out to the fields, the streams and the mountains. That Is life. Human beings were never Intend ed to be shut up forever in the swel tering, festering town. There Is more beauty In the granite piled up by the earthquake than In the hideous collec tion of bricks and mortar piled up by men. Thero Is more sweetness lu the grass and blossoms than in the clinking pavements. There Is mote health lu ono good outing than in all tho doctors prescriptions. Naturo Is wholesome, genuine. She docs not flatter us or Ho to us. She docs not nag at us or restrain us. She simply gives us our liberty nnd lets us do as wo plcaso. She says: "Hero I am. Take me or let mo alone. I am free to all and am never jealous. I havo no favors to offer, yet man can gain from mo whatever he desires. To tho weary I give rest; to the poet and artist beauty; to the avaricious wealth; to tho bruised heart balm and healing; to all health, vigor and wholesome en joyment I sustain in life and fold back to my bosom In death." To one tired of tho artificial, the hol low and the Insincere a day with na turo Is like n draft of cold water to one a thirst A Path to Truth. The greatest crop I hae raised on my rock farm has been a crop of dreams, and here Is ono of them: Nothing is real that is not perma nent Nothing Is permanent that la not perfect All elso passes away. It strives toward perfection as tho wave on the shore strives up tho sand, only to fall of reaching tho top and falling back. What then, of man is real, perma nent and perfect? God's thought of man, is it not? God's thoughts are things. They actually create in the one substance, which is spirit We seo but tho apparent man, tho symbol in tho manifested world, tho imperfect re flection like tho distorted reflection of the moon in tho uneven surface of tho water. God's man, tho ono produced by the divine thought is perfect There is tho eternal of each of us. There is our real self, tho only real self that exists. Oh, to keep this thought of our selves ever, to function In this Im mortal naturo that God makes by thinking of us! That would mean per feet health, perfect joy, perfect broth erhood and service. This is one of the visions that havo grown for mo on my llttlo rocky farm. Joe Biggs and the Grasshopper. The wheat stack was very high and was Just being topped out. The stacker asked for a Jug of water, and Joo Biggs volunteered to carry it up. Tho ladder was long, but still did not reach within six or seven feet of tho top. Jlmmlo, tho llttlo boy, was on the stack, whero ho had been handing sheaves to tho stacker. Joo stood on tho very top rung of tho ladder, holding the jug as high as ho could, so that Jlmmlo might reach It While In this position a very largo and hungry grasshopper lit on Joe's wrist and began operations. Jlmmlo did not want to Interfere with tho grasshopper's pursuit of hap piness, so was maddeningly deliberate in his movements. Joo tried to shake tho insect loose, but tho other was so busy with his excavations ho did not seem to mind. Finally Joe could stand It no longer and, letting go his hold on tho stack with his other hand, mado a vicious grab at tho hopper. Tho movement Jostled tho ladder, and in a moment more thero was a catastrophe. Joo, ladder, grasshopper, Jug and all began a wild slide down tho side of tho stack. First went tho ladder, on top of this was Joe, and in tho middle of Joe's stomach lit tho Jug, out of which tho water went with a spasmodic "kelug," "kelug," "kelug." To cap all was n largo bunch of sheaves which tho wild descent had torn joff tho wagon. This frightened tho librses, which began prancing and lunging. Out of all tho chaos, however, arose Joe Biggs, scratched and stunned, bul triumphant holding aloft with a grlni smile tho body of a dead grasshopper. As over cloud and gloom, As over shroud and tomb, Still therci is light. So, tempest tossed today. Truth may seem lost today, Yet In her might, Radiant, glorious. O'er all victorious, lUsca tho right. "To him that overcometh" In that phrase is packed tho whole meaning of life. It is not easy to overcome, but nothing that is worth whilo is easy. Rise abovo self. Triumph over environment It is all a question of rising, struggling, conquering, over coming. Anger and pride cannot llvo with love and happiness, for anger starts a quarrel, and pride keeps it going. Be fore it is composed two hearts avo bro ken and love and happiness have gone to llvo in more congeuial company. One of tho happiest men I over knew lived in a cabin and ono of tho most unhappy dwelt in a palace. From thl UaxeflnldiLtliath.criuQijekcp29 his body does nof matter so much as where he keeps his soul. Most evils grow out of tho fact that wo are too artificial, too abnormal, too affected. Wo are too far from Naturo that she would not know somo of ua without an introduction. JAMBS A. nilOBRTON, Cold Sprlng-on-the Flddfeon, N. T.
