TI-iujS Te Republican in politics, with (independence of which Fresl.lout sovelt is the leading exponent iddress All Communications to COOS RAY DAILY TIMES irshfleld Oregon HE DEVELOPMENT CONGRESS. mSt Some things were talked over at he Idaho-Oregon Development-Con gress, recently held in Marshfleld, hlch eventually may bring results. fTho most Important and significant thing which came before the meeting was Governor Chamberlain's reconi 'mendation that the state of Oregon pass initiative laws and build its own railroads. This thought, however, Is not original with the governor, for Francis H. Clarke, of Marshfleld, sug gested It over a year ago In the Coos iBay Times. i The matter of second importance was the action of making a perma nent organization of the Congress. Perhaps this is really the most im portant thing of all, since it insures other meetings and sets at rest any suspicion that the people of Idaho and Oregon are not in deadly earn est in their demands for more rail roads. When Mr. Harrlmau is ap prised of the significance of some things which transpired at Marshfleld he will take, a deeper interest in the demands of Oregon. For instance, Jho permanent secretary of the or ganization is C. A. Hardy of Eugene, who Is known and recognized as an 1 attorney who represents the Hill In terests In Oregon, and very likely was at Marshfleld at his employers' suggestion, as well as in the legiti mate interests of development. No i opprobrium may apply to Hardy, however, for at heart ho is a booster Whoso every effort is directed to wards greater things for Oregon, and slncq he Is in a position to advise with other interests than those of Harrlman, It Is plain the congress 1'inauu a wise selection in us secret- .ary. The suggestion of state railroad ownership sounds plausible and prac ticable to enthusiasts who grasp at any novel Idea advanced for the aid of our large undeveloped territory. But sober, candid reflection assures i the conservative Oregonlan that the proposition to build and equip state railroads is not likely to prove the .required speclflc. If the railioads could be built by the state the scheme would work out advantageously. But fthey cannot be built because every 'isolated section of tho state would want a road built at once nnd tho movement would break up In a gen- oral sectional row, for the voters would not authorize tho bonds re quired for so much expensive work at once. If a movemont of this na ture wore launched, however, It tmlght hurry matters among the rail roads which Intend building lines In. fjrtho state, and the effort could bo r.ijnbandoned when full nssuranco was I h ClVfln that tho mllrnniln wnuM nnoon , ...... w..u iiuiiiii mutiny i jockeying the commonwealth and got kdown to business. V . Tho Development Congress could' v jraafco a bigger noise If it would for j ii ot Harrlman altogether and mnko'i overtures to the Great Northorn, Northorn Paclflc and tho Northwest orn, all of which havo an eye on tho traffic of tho state. STAHL. $$$$$$ AWAKENING. f It were joy to have-lived, it only to know I had waked In this dusk of the woods to the flow Of ,a streamlet i that i leaps' down Its dell to the lea, Its wafers a-sparkle and beckoning to me. To have waked in the forest and mar veled to hear A bird at its matin-song gladsome nnd clear; "From daw'n-blue to sun-glow I've haunted your dream With the lure of Her love by the marge of the stream." To have slept In my sorrow and wakened but now With a kiss as of exquisite lips on my brow And Her call as of bells to a world that's reborn, ' And a beat In my blood like the laughter of morn: To have wandered and toiled in the deep forest aisles, To have counted in darkness the wearisome miles, To have slept for the dream's sake, and waked with Love's word At the lips of the stream, at the heart of the bird. SMART SET. dear; we can vote for Brynn nlways, so we'll vote for Taft this year." They had .a meeting in the "Foot's Corner the other evening and decided that the Coqs Bay- papers were not up-to-date in the way local news was porved to tfie public. As a samplo of what might be done to make tho local columns lively they offered the following sample: THE .MILLICOMA .MUZZLER. Vol 1 No. 1 "Big news," said the assistant edi tor, "Harrlman has gobbled another railroad." "Make It a stick full," said the edi tor. "What news feature do you see to that?" "The fact that there was a railroad he hadn't gobbled." "Make It a column." "And when your guide lost your" party what did you do?" "We all flred our guns and " "Why didn't you fire your guide?" "She Is eternally disgraced, and nothing short of a divorce will do hef now." "What has happened?" "She was giving a pink tea, and her husband came home and painted It red." Little Local Lines. Col. He ought to make a success of it, as he is the champion cranberry picker of North Slough. Since Grandpa Prouty lost his false teeth at the candy pull last week, he has been using a pair of horse-shoes instead, and when he chews he makes a noise like Sheridan twenty miles away. Slgnor Cantalopa Spaghetti is put ting in what is called a bath tub In connection with his barber shop. It la quite a curiosity here, and Count Spaghetti Is kept busy explaining its uses and the method of operation. Miss Peachy Pippin has so far re covered the use of her voice that she was able to appear at Young People's Meeting, Sunday Evening. Heeding the advice of her friends she did not take part In the song service, but re cited a nice little poem, called "The Mill by a Dam Site." --... Mrs. F.
