SOME REPORTED BURNED ALIVE Government Takes Action to Succor the Distress and Suffering. (By Associated Press.) TOKIO, Japan, Sept. 4. Dis patches tell of a fire yesterday which destroyed four thousand houses In the city of Nllgataln, In the Ichlgo province. Fearful scenes of desola tion and suffering followed. The government Is rendering assistance hut cannot recompense the citizens for the great loss. A number are re ported to have been burned alive, but this has not been confirmed. ER DIED TODAY Oliver Dalrymple, Famous As North Dakota "Bonanza Wheat Farmer," Succumbs (By Associated Press.) ST. PAUL, Sept. 4. Word was re-' ceived here today that Oliver Dalrynv pie, the noted "Bonanza Wheat Farm er" of North Dakota, is dead. His farm consisted of seventeen sections or nearly eleven thousand acres. It Is probably one of the best-known farms in America and Mr Dalrymple had gained wide renown as its ownej and manager. Warden Whitney of Idaho Pen itentiary May Lose Job For Alleged Violation of Rules. BOISE, Ida., Sept. 4. The Idaho State Board of Pardons is investigat ing the charge that Warden Whitney of the State penitentiary, violated his Instructions by making Harry Or chard a "trusty" and giving him pri vileges npt enjoyed by other prison ers serving time for similar crimes. According to the charges made ,to the board, Orchard has enjoyed the privileges of a "trusty" ever since the death penalty was imposed after his conviction of the murder of ex Governor Steunenberg and that Or chard has not been required to even wear the usual stripes and number. ' The Breakwater arrived In early today with a large number of pas sengers and a good sized cargo of freight. Captain Magenn wa3 ready to bring down the dredge which is practically In readiness to be sent, to Coos Bay but Major Mclndoe of the government engineering depart ment at Portland is awaiting the offi cial sanction of his superiors before sending the dredge here. The delay is said to be due to the "red tape" of government work. The Breakwater will sail at 5 o'clock Saturday and will probably have a capacity load of passengers out as a large number of reservations have already been made. Sargent Succumbs at Washington Today to Stomach Trouble. (By Associated Press.) WASHINGTON, D. C, Sept. 4. Frank P. Sargent, commissioner of immigration of the United States De partment of Commerce and Labor, died today of stomach trouble. For seventeen years, he was chief of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen. The old salmon cannery of Elijah Smith at Empire City has been leased by W. E. Tallant and will be operated by him during tho fall season. He sont down today a cannery crew and f supplies and a thorough trial will be made to learn If enough salmon can be caught there to operate It. Mr. Tallant operates the big cannery at Astoria. Oren, Dr. E. Mingus and Col. Wm. Grimes to Consti tute Coos Bay Committee. Owing to unexpected difficulties, the personnel of the Coos Bay Com mittee 'to meet E. H. Harriman at Roseburg tomorrow has been chang ed considerably and will probably consist of J. E. Oren, Dr. E. Mingus and Col. Wm. Grimes. Mr. Oren left with his wife and son for Rose burg yesterday and Col. Grimes and Dr. Mingus left early today. Mayor E. E. Straw of Marshfield, and Mayor L. J. Simpson of North Bend, were unable to get away. C. J. Millis and W. P. Evans who were in Portland, decided to return via Coos Bay Instead of going direct to Roseburg and then go over with tho rest of the committee, but the Break water, owing to the dense fog, did not get in time to allow them to join the others. Just what will transpire at the con ference is hard to guess, but many Coos Bay boosters believe that since Mr. Harriman ordered the resump tion of work on the Tillamook line, he Is quite apt to do so on tho Coos Bay-Drain line. After one of the most successful and en joyable reunions In years, the South ern Oregon Veterans Association oT Coos County and tho Coos County" Pioneers Association adjourned Inst, evening after electing officers andS selecting Marshfield as tho next meeting place. Dr. C. W. Tower ofT Marshfield, was honored by betas' elected president of both organiza tions for tho ensuing year. It had been previously planned to hold the next annual meeting in the- grove on the old Hermann homestead and make It a celebration of the fif tieth anniversary of the. arrival o the famous Baltimore colony in tho Coqulllo Valley, but when Dr. Tower presented the joint invitations from tho Marshfield Chamber of Com merce and Marshfield city council, it was unanimously decided to accept them. Instead of converting the reu nions into a celebration of the fif tieth anniversary of the arrival of the Baltimore colony, tho latter eveut will bo celebrated separately by a picnic at the homestead of Dr Honry H. Hermann who lead the Baltimore colony Into tho Coqullla Valley. It Is thought that the four generations of the colony will be im attendance at tho j)icnlc, making about 200 In all.
