'C'rinij'V"'iiMJMMi'iWli'i3iiw THE DAILY COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 1908. 55M5aMrrirt5fff'Biipyi&i(Tg KfiJHH THE -- Midway between Golden Gate and the Sound, Coos Day makes Its triumphal entry into the coast of Oregon. Here the ocean extends a long arm into the mainland and crooking tis elbow sharply, reaches Its right hand, so to speak, back to its shoulder again. The space en folded is "the peninsular" on which the population has mainly collected. Tho hand is there, too, whose hollow center Is the Inner Harbor and there are Ave valleys whclh make oft like tho four fingers and thumb of tho hand along the deep channels of a3 many navigable inlets. It Is an in teresting fact that each of these fln- i gers and thumb holds an active coal mine on its tip. The Mill Slough, so called, is the thumb, short and Btubby, and it is an easy grade to the McClellan mine down to the bay. Coalbank Inlet (the finger of Mars), is the forefinger which conducts tha products of the Llbby coal mine to Marshfleld. The middle finger (tho finger of Saturn) Is Isthmus inlet, which reaches almost to the rich Co quille valley. It is deep and wide and may become an Applan way of Commerce. The Beaver Hill, Henry villo, Maxwell and other mines clust er like jewels at its knuckles, and tip. Catching Inlet is the third finger and at its tip lies that dimi nutive paradise called Sumner. The Newcastle Coal mine is at Its second joint. The little finger of the hand ' Coos River Is not the least by any means. It is a microcosm of all the world of summer loveliness and pastoral peace. There is In Marshfleld a hill near the joint of the thumb which belongs for the most part to the Southern Oregon Company. Palmists, carry ing out tho simile of the hand, would call It the Mount of Venus, but some body once likened it to Mars Hill in ancient Athens. It ought to be called Mars Hill. Between the thumb, Mill Slough and tho forefinger, Is the lowland from which Marshfleld takes its name. Tho peninsular north of tho thumb, along the edge of tho hand and the arm, is tho Marshfleld water front and offers a market placo for tho ships of that ocean which has seized this remarkable spot and holds it for some mighty purpose. No wonder that a city has sprung up at the wrist of this wonderful hand! No wonder the four fingers and thumb, overflowing with varied resources and abounding In unnum bered attractions, roll all the local wealth to tho deep water In front of Marshfleld. The palmist reads in S UNHEALTHY California State Board's Startl ing Disclosures Situation On Coos Bay. SACRAMENTO, Aug. 23. Secre tary N. K. Fostor, of tho State Board of Health, said today that an analysis of several thousand samples at the Stato laboratory at Borkeloy showed that nearly all tho cheap candy sold in California is grossly adulterated, somo of tho chewing candles con taining as much as 23 per cent pnraf flno. Many other adulterations are used, hut tho Indigestible quality of paraf Jlno makes its almost universal uso in tho cheapor grades of caudles a matter of special concern to tho Stato Board of Hoalth. Of soventy-slx manufacturers and dealers in food products that aro to ho given a hearing boforo tho board on August -, a largo proportion aro candy merchants. .Modern Company For Purity. Tho above press dispatch has occa sioned something of a sonsatlon In many sections, striking as It does at tho world's most cherished posses sions, its hoys and girls. Everyone uses candy now and thou, but tho children are tho most regular pat rona of the candy trade. Desiring to secure oomo Information as to condi tions on Coos Bay a Timoa reportor Interviewed W. C. Bradloy, of Mio ilodorn Co., in reference to the ex- CHEAP A D - - - - - HAND OF COOS BAY By Francis H. Clarke the lines of this hand of the Pacific, a destiny which must be, not yield ing but commanding. That thumb do the people of Marshfleld know what strength It has? Do they know that It bends Its joint through a na tural pass across that peninsular whero some day a market street like that of San Francisco shall thunder from hand to shoulder from harbor to bar and that what the hand lifts to the shoulder, the shoulder shall carry with Herculean ease to the ut termost parts of the earth? Do they know that the imperial forefinger ; - s ..SSi Xrt5 Si j?;?. :At Coalbank will erelong point the way along the sunny south slopes whose benches must be orchard laden to the tumult of transcontinental traf fic? Do they know that every knuc kle of the finger of Saturn (Ibthmus) will seo separate subcentors of the great seaport of Coos Bay, and that ships will plough through its pictur ed waters into tho Coquille, Bandon and Myrtle Point? Do they know that Catching Inlet Is tho finger of tho Sun and that Its destiny will wsw tent that adulteration is practiced by candy manufacturers. After being shown the above dis patch Mr. Bradley said: "You will notice by this dispatch that parafllno is the most largely used adulterant as well as it is the most 'ndlgestible and injuripus ingre dient and Is strictly forbidden by tho pure food laws. I cannot make any statement regarding other candy manufacturers, but I can say abso lutely and with tho greatest emphasis posslblo that there is not and never has been an ounco of parafllno in tho candy factory of tho Modern Com pany. Not only is there none of this poison but no other adulterant or in jurious Ingredient of any character 'n "Modern Sweets." Tho most critical analysis nnd careful examin ation of theso candles will prove that they conform not only to tho Oregon puro food Inw but to tho national puro food law as well, for nothing but tho purest sugar and pure fruit flavors and extracts enter into tho composition of "Modern Sweets." I am glad to seo tho papers taking this matter up for it is something tho public should bo Informod upon. It is a matter of very great Import ance that a food so universally usod and onto going Into every homo should bo free from tho contamination of commeiclul greed which would not hcsltuto to use poisonous adulterants In ordor to incieaso profits." In parting Mr. Bradloy remarked "You cannot bo too emphatic in your ntatomont thnt tho Modern Confec tionary Company's products are free from all adulterants." Coos River is tho fin ger of Mercury and tho Palmist says It is governed by the planet Mercury vhich Insures it a greatness all its own. It would be dollghtful to note the bulging forearm of Plat B and the strength and grace of the olbow movement at North Bend. The broad shoulder where it joins the mighty main, in vites the arsenals and fortresses of defense. But the shoulder, the el bow, tho forearm and tho hand are each' nnd all necessary to make Coos Bay great and each for all and all for each must be the universal watchword. - BANDON BRIEFS. Geo. Ferrler and Mrs. McKiel gave their friends the slip Sunday and went to Coquille where they were married returning Monday. On the same evening they were given a cha rivari at the homo of the bride's daughter Mrs. Nygren. Last Thursday night at the home of tho bride's mother. Mrs. Laura Taylor, Miss Orlco Taylor and Mr. W. R. Hancock were united in mar rlago by tho evangelist Vandersloot. The house was very prettily decorat ed and after the ceremony supper was served to tho young couple and guests. Tho families of the brldo and groom were tho only ones pres ent. Tho young couple are both residents of Bandon and a wide cir cle of friends extend congratulations. Wednesday afternoon tho Bandon homo of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hartman with all Its contents was practically dostroyed by fire. Tho cause of tho fire Is unknown as there was no ono In tho house at the tlmo and bofore It was discovered tho flames wero leaping Into tho air from every door and window. Tho house in It self was not of so much value as the furniture. Mr. and Mrs, Hartman had about $500 worth of books, a Stelnwny arand piano, many beauti ful pictures and a largo amount of other furniture, which together with the houso brought the losu of at least $l,G0O with no Insurance.
