States engineer, arrived this morn
ing from Portland to make preli
minary arrangements for tho gov
ernment dredge which will nrrive
lioro within a few days to improve
tho harbor and channel. Mr, Car
roll's purpose Is to consult with lead
ing local citizens and contributors to
tho fund to secure tho drertgn nM
will then report to Major Mclndoo,
engineer in charge, on tho situation.
Mr. Carroll said this morning that
ho did not feel at liberty to make
any statement concerning tho plans
for tho dredgo. Ho said ho was hero
to Investigate and leport his findings
to Major Mclndoe. Ho would con
sult with tho local people and try
and conform with tholr wishes so
far as practicable.
