Robertson of the Pacific States Telephone Company, a petition ask ing for Improvements in the phone service there and also changes re garding the 'switching charges on the Coqullle-Myrtle Point loop. . Delay School" Contract. Owing to the absence of J. W. Bennett, a mem ber of the school board, on his an nual deer hunt, the bids for tho new Marshfield school building will not be opened tomorrow. Tho acceptance of bids will close July 16, but no awards will be made before Satur day. Honors For Former Coos Bay Man. Howard M. Brownell who has just been appointed deputy prosecuting attornoy for Clatsop county, Oregon, Is well known on Coos Bay having formerly practised law here, at Co quille and at Bandon. Ho left a number of years ago, going to Astoria. Former Resident Drowns. Ac cording to press dispatches, Herbert H. McLain, a Stanford University man who played on the Marshfield baseball team part of last season, was drowned at Bay Point, Califor nia, near San Francisco, while bath ing Sunday. He made a number of friends during his short residence here who sincerely regret tho accident. maintaining his usual vigilance in seeing that deer hunters do not vlo1 late the state laws, the open season having opened today. It has been roportod to him that some have been running deer with dogs and he pro poses to make an example of some one as this is strictly In violation of the law. Pleasant Picnic Party. Mrs. Wm. Lawlor, Jr., was a hostess to a pleas ant launch picnic party given yes terday in honor of Mrs. V. L. Ver dellct, Mr. Lawlor's sister who Is vis iting here. Some half-dozen ladies were in the party and enjoyed a most delightful day. Fish Warden Coming. H. C. Mc Allister, the master fish warden of Oregon, Is expected here the latter part of this week to Inspect the Coos river hatchery. He Is on a general inspection trip. Everything is In good shape at the Coos river hat chery, Superintendent F. S. Smith now being engaged in rebuilding tho racks which were washed out by a freshet last winter. New Building Ordinance. City Attorney Farrin and Mayor E. E. Straw after having consulted a num ber of architects have drafted a new building ordinance for Marshfield and a special meeting of the city council will bo hold tonight or some time this week to pass It. Tho ordinance is said to be quite strin gent In its provisions, Its object be ing to eliminate dangerous construction. Catch Big Cod Fish. F. W. Rie der has returned from Charleston Bay where he has been camping1 since the first of the month. Tho other members of the party, Mrs. Reeder and daughter and F. E. Boden and wife are expected homo today. Mr. Reeder says that ho caught cod fish weighing more than thirty pounds near Charleston and that they secured rock oysters by tho gallon without effort. Bnudon Bnnd Coming. President F. P. Norton of the Second Southern Oregon District Fair, which will bo hold here August 26 to 29, inclusive, has engaged the Bandon concert band as one of the attractions for the fair. He made arrangements with George Topping of Bandon yes terday. The Bandon band is ono of the best musical organizations in tho northwest and Mr. Norton Is highly gratified over being able to secure them. Signs Phone Franchise Mayor E. E. Straw last evening affixed his signature to the telephone franchise which was recently granted R. T. Durett. Mr. Durett Is In Portland consulting with representatives of the Homo Telephone Company which Is to back his project. Ho has thirty days in which to accept the fran chise. He is also negotiating with the Pacific States Telephone Com pany regarding the purchase of tho local exchanges. No Electric Railway Franchise Grunted A report that the Marsh field council at a Becret session re cently had granted a franchise to Seymour II. Bell and others for as electric railway in Marshfield caused considerable commotion among Marshfield people last evening and this morning. City Clerk W. F. Squire said that the report was ab solutely unfounded, that thero had been no secret session and that the electric line franchise had not been brought up since it was withdrawn soveral months ago.
