Does it do yourself or anybody else any good to whine about hard times, real or pros pective? And 'would it-require less effort or be a less agreeable task to help the fellows who are trying to improve conditions, to build up in stead of tear down? Good times and bad are the result largely of the tem perament of the people who seem to take spells of being grouchy and despondent for no apparent reason. It is to offset these periods that the philosophers of good cheer and good times form their "booster" clubs and "don't worry" societies and you ought to be Initiated into both before you become a chronic malcontent. THE LEATHER INDUSTRY AND THE FOREST No other 'nation produces half as much tanned, curried, and finished leather as the United States, which yields over one-fourth of the world's supply. Six hundred and seventeen tanneries contribute to this output. The raw material Includes a hundred and eight million hides and skins, including a largo number from Ar gentina. To tan this immense quan tity of leather, valued at over 250 million dollars, last year required over a million and a quarter cords of tanbark, worth nearly $13,000,000 and more than six hundred and fifty thousand barrels of tanning extract, worth $8,700,000. Over two-thirds of tho tanbark consumed comes from hemlock, and over one-fourth from oak; chestnut and other woods contribute the re mainder. More extract Is secured from chestnut, however, than from all other domestic woods combined. A small quantity of extract of a little ovora thousand barrels comes from over a thousand barrels comes from Although the tanning industry is widely distributed over tho United States, tho greater part of it Is car ried on In tho States of Pennsylvania, Now York, Michigan and Wisconsin, which use moro than two-thirds of the tanning materials consumed. Pennsylvania alone consumes over nine hundred million pounds of bark and extract worth $8,000,000, or 37 per cent of the total value. Since 1900 tho quantity of tanbark used has fallen off 15 per cent, al though its value has Increased. Dur ing this period tho consumption of oxtract Increased from C7.000 to C60.000 barrels a year, of which nearly 90,000 barrels were Imported. Relatively small quantities of hem lock bark were Imported from Can ada, and of mangrove bark from tho West Indies and Africa. In weight, four times as much quebracho was imported In bark as in oxtract form, but the value of tho two forms was about tho same. Bark brought the lowest prlco in New Hampshire, and tho highest in Oregon, with an nvorago of $9.30 por cord. More than In mark tho prlco of extract varied widely according to tho material from which it was ma nufactured. Tho extract of quebra cho, a treo of Mexico, Central Ameri ca, South America and tho West In dies, from which soven-elghths of all imported tanning mntorlals nro so cured, had an average prlco of $18 por barrol; nnd hemlock brought $12.00 per barrel; oak $9.90 por barrol, and chestnut $9.12 por barrel. Louis Schott was arrested last week at Shaniko, and the charge was that he shot Frank Knott when Knott was not doing a thing to Schott. Schott claims that the shot he shot did not harm Knott In fact the shot that shot Knott was not shot by Schott: farther than tint the accused man swears that when Knott was shot' Schott was not In the town. Knott declares that th? shot that Schott shot at Knott ihot Knott the shot entering his body in divers quantities, and phvslciuna could not extract all the sot that Schott shot into Knott. . will be a corker for the juries.
