THE DAILY COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD, OREGON, MONDAY, JUNE 29, 1908. f The Myers Store North Bend, Ore. The Myers Store NorLh Bend, Ore. at WN MARSHFIELD DROPS GUI SHOW i - i IP V cT" y h Defeat Whisnant's Recruits By Score of 7 to 3 Taylor Still Stand By. Bandon took North Bend down the line yesterday at North Bend, by a score of 7 to 3. The result was a decided surprise and disappointment to the North Bend fans because they had just added three recruits, In cluding a pitcher, to the team and they expected a much better show ing. Hull, the new pitcher from Sa lem, was a sad disappointment be cause the Bandon aggregation sim ply landed on him. Finally North Bend had to fall back on Taylor who won the thirteen-inning game at Co quille a week ago by going in the box in the seventh inning for North Bend and after he entered the box, the game was more evenly contested. "While they found Taylor, he kept the hits scattered. Bandon played a good game, much better than they put up against aiarshfleld a week ago. Jordan pitched better ball for one thing and the field was a little more snappy, not to speak of better stick work. North Bend's new players had just arrived and the result was probably due somewhat to the lack of team work, caused by Inability to practice together, and the new men not being in condition to play their best. This was said to be particularly true of Hull who didn't appear to be able to strike his gait. The score: Bandon AB R H SB PO A B C. Myers, c.5 1 2 1 5 4 1 A. Myers, ss. 5221341 R. Jake Goldie hasn-'t got over the effects of the awful jolt that Wilson, the North Bend pitcher, handed him two weeks ago. While he played a good game in the field yesterday, he wasn't there with the stick, being unwittingly inclined to step back when ho struck and resulting in his striking out five times. However, the fans understood about Jake's still very tender jaw and were will ing to pass it by because they know that "Old Man Goldie" is far from a dead one yet. The absence of McCutcheon was felt sorely by Marshfield yesterday. His reliable stickwork would have ' probably changed the result. No one knows when he will be able to return from Carlton where he was I called by his father's death. There was considerable wonder i ment expressed yesterday becaube Jimmy Cowan wasn't playing with Marshfield. W. 0. W. AND W. OF W. i TO ENTERTAIN MANY. Coquille and Bandon fans won heavily from the Marshfield and North Bend baseball enthusiasts as a result of tho Coos Bay teams drop ping both games yesterday. Ban don made the biggest killing at North Bend and the reason why Co quille didn't got more in Marshfield was because their money ran out leaving largo sums going begging here. Tho Coquille aggregation "pooled" their money coining up on tho train, making a purse of $250. As soon as they leached town, they passed out tho word that they had that much raised and In less than twenty min utes, local fans had It covored and woro offering large sums without takors. In addition to this, there woro numerous side bets. Five North Bend men are said to havo diopped fGSO In a pool bet to a bunch from Bandon, In addition to this, theio wore many good sized othor bets mndo at oven money. LIVELY HE North Bend Man In Quest of Ball Players Proves Portland's Most Prominent Man. PORTLAND, June 29. The Port land Telegram says: "If there had been a contest on for tho most pop ular man In Portland last Thursday, it would have been a cinch for one man. He is J. W. Gardner, of North Bend, sent up here to scout for com ing big-league material to bolster up the yielding ranks of tho North Bend and Marshfield teams of the Coos County League. "It did not take long for the news to circulate among the youthful ball chasers of this burg, and they de scended upon the Imperial Hotel, where Mr. Gardner was stopping, like the vanguard of the Summer colony upon a stray bachelor. Mr. Gardner was wakened at 10:30 by the cham bermaid yelling "Gangway," in order to get along the hall for her morning chores. "The manager did not know whether he had a fake mining pro moter or Lord Somebody for a guest, but took a chance and asked him to move into a room as near the ele vator as possible to save tho carpets. "Every semi-pro. manager in the city would be taken with chills and ague If the baseball players who called upon Mr. Gardner were enu merated but the Coos County man had the pick of the city. They were all big leaguers kept down by short sighted managers, according to their song and dance. "Mr. Gardner proved himself a good judge of players by the men he took, and must have gotten Inside advice from somebody. He picked three of the stars of the Salem bunch In Pitcher Hull, Third Baseman Por terfleld and Left Fielder Manion, and started for Coos Bay with them:" GEN. VICKERS DEAD. (By Associated Press.)
