One Year $1.50 The policy of tho Coos Bay Times will bo Republican In politics, with the independence of which President Roosevelt is the leading exponent. Address All Communications to COOS BAY DAILY TIMES Marsiiflcld Oregon PRESIDENT WILLIAM II. TAPT. The selection of William H. Taft to be the standard bearer of the Re publican party in the approaching presidential contest, again signalizes the high calling to which that party is directed. If great intellect, great executive and judicial ability, train ing, experience, education and uncor rupted and uncorruptible statesman ship and character will satisfy the American majority, the nominee of the party will be the next president. The most popular man in the Repub lic today is Theodore Roosevelt. His popularity rests upon the disinterest ed and forceful manner in which he has inaugurated certain policies which were not only timely, but so much needed that without them Republican government was likely to become a farce and a by-word among the nations. With a sincerity which marks his fame as far from transitory, ho has Insisted on sacri ficing his personal preferment to what he believes to be the nation's good by repeating Washington's ex ample of declining a third term for the presidential office. Washington's example of more than a century has been revivified by the most popular president since Washlngtpn's time. William H. Taft, part and parcel of Roosevelt policies, great leader and adviser, yet independent and strong as Cromwell himself, is not only the logical successor of the great Presi dent, but has elements of strength which no president has united In his own person since the days of John Qulncy Adams at Jeast. If tho Republican party Is sincere in its professions of fealty to Roose velt's standards, William H. Taft will be supported without diminution by Republican states, and if the American people are sincere In their desire to keep overgrown trusts and swollen fortunes within limits tho same majorities which have approved Roosevelt's policies will be pronounc ed In favor of Taft. Taft will carry, not merely the standard of Roose velt, but the standard of free Ameri ca and honest methods to victory. The American people know this and knowing it they can not afford to change from the known to the un known. Particularly Is this true on tho Pa cific coast. Hero tho people realize that no man knows their needs and is moro interested in their advance ment than William H. Taft. Ho tynows the Pacific as no other Cauca sian statesman of Europo or Ameri ca knows it. He knows tho Orient ns no other American statesman knows it, Ho knows tho Panama canal better than any other politician in tho world. Ho knows more about the political economies of South American republics and the economic and political needs of the Central American and Insular parts of Amer ica than any man living. This is an equipment which no president not even Roosevolt, over possessed in tho same degree. The noxt four years are frought with unmeasured nnd immeasurable Importance to the Pa cific coast. Its commercial develop ment, tho Improvement of Its water ways, tho reclamation of its desert areas, tho fostering of Its trade with the new and awakening Asiatic na tions, demand tho election of Taft. No other man will do. Hollo neighbor. You must not miss It! What? Tho "High Jinks" of Coos Bay Cnmp No. IOC AV. O. AV Saturday uvonlng, Juno 20, 1908. It'll bo a hummor, sure. Let us have faith that right makes might, and In this faith, let us, to tho end, dare to do H our duty, as we understand it. Abraham Lincoln. G&ZXZX It was a pleasant day in June, And great was the convention The sun was riding high at noon, And tho land was all attention. "Alabama!" called tho clerk. And the convention went daft When a delegate showed his head Out In the seething mass and said, "Count 22 for Taft!" The Cannon men turn pale as ghosts. And tho Hughes men gasped for breath The men for Fairbanks hung to posts As colorless as death. "Arkansas!" the clerk exclaimed. And the hall shook foro and aft When a spry teller, white of hair, Hopped to the main deck of his chair. And cried, "Eighteen for Taft!" The Fairbanks men exuded groans, And tho Cannon men shed tears And the Hughes men uttored none but moans That once had uttered cheers, "California!" boomed the clerk, And the whole convention laughed When the Golden State man arose And shrilly shouted at the foes "Count 20 more for Taft!" The Hughes men looked at the Can non men, And the Fairbanks men, from prayers And grieving, joined the others when They pulled their Teddy Bears, And they all rushed up on the plat form high, As men who had gone daft And when the din and the tumult died, And the dust had settled some In side. The candidate was Taft. Adapted. It is difficult to philosophize with case of dyspepsia. In talking, as In shooting, should aim at a mark. one It is surprising what a pretty girl can do with a dimple In her cheek! You can trust a woman to fill out her clothes in the funniest places. It Is all right to do a driving busi ness, but don't be a human hammer. Sumo Coos Bay men cannot be even a carbon copy of a successful man. "A close relative, says a Coos Bay young man, "is one from whom you cannot borrow money." Some Coos Bay people care more about the pudding than the truth and they prefer to chew the rag instead of chewing the string. Some Coos Bay men will lose ?1 worth of time standing around a cigar counter waiting for a friend to come along and buy them a five-cent cigar. "Hard drinking has lost his money and his reputation as well." "Not altogether." "No?" "No, ho still has his reputation for hard drinking," Jay Tower is sai,d to be engaged on a new song that will undoubted ly bo one of the most popular suc cesses of tho year. It Is in the na ture of a pathetic ballad entitled "He Married Himself to a Marcel AVavo, and Now He's All at Sea." A woman went Into Norton & Han son's yesterday and said to AVarner Ogrcn, "Lot mo havo a copy of An tony and Cleopatra." "Yes, ma'am," AVarner replied, "ono dollar, please." "Dear me," she answered, "I've only got fifty cents. Just glvo me Antony." A pale, wan woman on her death bed said in a weak voice to her hus band: "Henry, If I die, promlso mo one thing." "Gladly, my poor darling. What is it I nm to promise?" "Promise mo that you will marry Mary Simpson." Tho man started. "But," ho snld, "I thought you hated her." "I do, Henry," the dying woman whispored. "I want to get evon with her." FRKE skating for tho ladles at the Rink Saturday ovenlng, June 20. X AT THE CHURCHES t ii CATHOLIC CHURCH. Rev.
