Address All Communications to COOS BAY DAILY TLMES Marshfleld Oregon HOPE IS ETER.VAL. "I have long since abandoned the measured and proscribed prospect for this city and section, for the prospect fortuitous. Whatever comes to Coos Bay henceforth will come as a gift not as an achievement wrought of her own unity and de sign. It Is too much to expect her people to merge on any one large and excellent thing; It Is not of her quality; It must come through the happiest Inadvertence, the largess of luck and the benefice of some extra neous Interest and agency; some other man's or towns' opportunity. I have been driven to this conclu blon, finally and inevitably. "With the whirl of a great commercial awakening in the Northwest she may yet come In to her own through the shrewdness of some friendly giant who realizes, at a glance, the potent facilities she offers for business and advancement; this is her only re source." The foregoing is the substance of the talk put up by an ex-resident of Empire who still retains sharp inter est In the city and county, and late ly sojourning here. He speaks sor rowfully, with the honesty of reso lute conviction born of thirty years of disappointment. And the thoughtful Coos Bay citizen will do the wisest thing of his life if he takes this old ex-citizens words for what they are worth and weighs tbem in the scale of his own greater or lesser experience. The time is ripe for a genuine awaken ing in this man's town. Hope is left us; and with this and the undis turbed natural advantages as eter nal as that hope, we may rise to a unified, direct and successful pro gram and field, that will annihilate such sad prophesies, deep founded and justifiable as their prophet may) uuuiu lueiu. 1 AT THE CHURCHES 4 The Rev. J. E. Burkhart of North I Bend, will occupy the pulpit in the Marshfleld Presbyterian church to morrow, the services being held at ' the usual hours. The subject of his j morning sermon will be "Pattern In the Mount" and of the evening ser mon "What are you worth." The English Lutheran services which were regularly held In the Red Men's hall, will be discontinued for the present. As the pastor came here under the prospectus of a grow ing town, and would not have come under present conditions, he thinks It better to start afresh again when the town makes a fresh start. The same good people who so loyally helped the movement from the very beginning are still with us, the same need of an English Lutheran church is felt now as it was then, but what the movement needs Is a sufficient in flux of members (not of local chur ches), but of other Lutheran chur ches such as the German, the Danish and the Norwegian. These will cer tainly come when "The Call of Coos Bay" is being answered, but at pre sent no living members of any Luth eran churches except the local Swed ish are located in Marshfleld. We herewith thank the good people for their zeal and their sacrifice, and are confident that a movement began and continued under the present un favorable conditions must be suc cessfully finished and completed at some future and not far distant time. WM. F. HOLL, Pastor. Mass will be solemnized in the Catholic church at S o'clock and 10:30 Sunday morning, the Rev. Father E. Donnelly celebrant. The regular Sunday morning and Sunday evening services will be held at the Episcopal church, morning service being at 11 o'clock evening service at 7:30. MARGARET ILES CO.
